CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State lost at home for the first time this women's soccer season when the Beavers fell 2-1 to Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. The Beavers (4-3-1 overall) got within a goal on Katie Henderson's penalty kick in the 87th minute, but couldn't get the equalizer against the Hornets (2-2-0).
OSU outshot Sacramento State 20-5 but some lapses by the Beavers made the difference.
"We made a few errors, and they cost us," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "That's not good enough. We can only look at ourselves after a game like that ... to be a successful program, those are the games you've got to win. We just didn't take care of some simple things."
Sacramento State went up 1-0 in the 50th minute when Kristin Hoffman lobbed a long pass into the OSU box from midfield, Lisa Wrightsman, standing in a group of Hornets, flicked it past Beaver goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease. Then, in the 75th minute, SSU's Hillary Barton found herself in a one-on-one matchup with Pease, Barton dribbled in from the left side and shot into the upper right corner for a 2-0 lead.
The Beavers were playing without junior defender Allison Hamada, who was forced to sit out one game after being issued a red card in Friday's 3-2 win over Idaho for a handball violation in the box.
"Alli makes a difference at the back for us," Fennah said. "She provides us some composure and organization, but this did give us a chance to look at a lot of people."
After a Beaver was dragged down in the left side of the Hornet box in the 87th minute, Henderson drilled her third penalty kick of the season to make it 2-1. OSU managed two more shots in the closing moments but neither would find the net.
"You can see from the manner of the game that we played well," Fennah said. "We did everything but score. Now we've got a full week to prepare for our next game (on Sept. 26 at Portland State). This is disappointing. We've taken a lot of steps forward this season, this wasn't taking two steps back but it was a hiccup. Now we've got a chance to take care of things again next weekend."
