DENVER, Colo. - Oregon State earned second place in the Denver Invitational women's soccer tournament Sunday afternoon, handing Colorado College its first loss of the season by a 1-0 score. The Beavers (3-2-1 overall) and Colorado College (5-1-0) both went 1-1 in the tournament but OSU earned second place by virtue of its win over CC.
Denver won the tournament, beating Oregon State 2-0 on Friday and Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis 3-0 on Sunday. The Pioneers' Kerri Weaver was named the tournament's Offensive Most Valuable Player.
BreeAnna Jolin's goal in the 63rd minute Sunday was the first score allowed by Colorado College this season. Beaver goalkeeper Jerika Duran earned a shutout in her first OSU start with the help of a defense led by freshman Whitney Horn, who was the tournament's Defensive Most Valuable Player.
"Whitney had a great game at the back," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "Olivia Jackson, Allison Hamada and Christy Castalanelli all stepped it up there, as well ... we started a little slow, but we solved the problems and got organized, then got stronger as the game went on."
OSU's goal came after Leila Kaady and Morgan Crabtree exchanged the ball in the midfield, Kaady then pushed a through ball to Jolin. Jolin dribbled in and shot from the top of the box, beating Colorado College goalkeeper Kristin Masunga to the bottom right corner of the net with a crisp drive for her team-high sixth goal of the season.
Fennah also praised the play of Kaady, Crabtree and Jen VanderArend in the midfield and Sunny Miller at forward.
"They (the midfielders) dominated possession in the center of the park, and Sunny did a nice job of holding the ball up and allowing us to develop our offense," Fennah said.
Oregon State now returns home for a pair of games next weekend on the Beavers' Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium, meeting Idaho on Friday at 5 p.m. and Sacramento State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
