DENVER, Colo. - Oregon State had its three-game unbeaten streak in women's soccer end with a 2-0 loss to Denver in the first round of the Denver Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Beavers (2-2-1 overall) had beaten No. 13 Virginia and tied No. 14 Wisconsin before losing to the Pioneers.
"It was a game where we just never got into a rhythm at all," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "We struggled getting possession of the ball and, to some extent, getting used to the environment - it was a bumpy field. But we have no excuses. We just didn't take care of things."
The Beavers now get ready to play Colorado College in the second round of the tournament at 10 a.m. PDT Sunday. Colorado College (5-0-0) beat Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis 8-0 in Friday's other first-round game.
"We've just got to get refocused," Fennah said. "As much as anything, we've got to go out and realize things like that happen sometimes. A week ago, emotions were high after we'd beaten Virginia, then it turns around today and we just don't get into a game."
In Friday's game, OSU was outshot by just an 11-10 margin but Denver's Andrea Raleigh scored a goal in each half to give the Pioneers (2-1-1) the win. In the 23rd minute, Kristen Warren passed to Raleigh for a breakaway that beat Beaver goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease to make it 1-0. In the 63rd minute, it was Kerri Weaver crossing the ball right before Raleigh put it away.
