CORVALLIS, Ore. - Felicia Ragland scored 27 points Monday night to lead Oregon State to an 89-73 win over Lokomotiva Kosice in exhibition women's basketball at Gill Coliseum. The non-counting victory was the Beavers' first outing of the year, OSU officially begins its season with a home game against Portland State on Nov. 22.
Ragland, a sophomore guard, was 8-for-17 from the field and 8-for-8 at the free throw line. She also had seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.
The Beavers got impressive debuts from two freshmen guards. Nicole Funn had 11 points and eight rebounds, while Michelle Estell had 10 points and five rebounds.
Senior center Sissel Pierce had 12 points and nine rebounds in just 22 minutes before fouling out, and Reda Petraitis had seven steals and three assists. The Beavers came up with 20 steals as they forced 26 turnovers, and OSU outrebounded the visitors from Slovakia 47-29.
Oregon State scored the game's first eight points, getting four each from Ragland and Pierce. The Beavers led 35-28 at the half, then took control with an eight-point run early in the second half.
Lokomotiva Kosice was within 46-38 after a 3-pointer by Zuzana Skvarekova with 16:28 remaining in the game. But the Beavers struck for eight quick points in just over a minute, going in front 54-38 on a pair of Ragland free throws with 15:13 left, and Lokomotiva Kosice never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
