EL PASO, Texas - Katie Henderson's penalty kick in the 80th minute lifted Oregon State past Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis 2-1 in non-league women's soccer Friday afternoon. With the victory in the first round of the World Soccer Shootout, OSU (6-3-1 overall, 0-0-0 Pacific-10) will play for at least a share of the tourney championship when it meets host Texas-El Paso on Sunday at noon PDT.
The win over IUPUI (2-9-0, 1-0-0 Mid-Continent) marked the fourth straight game in which Henderson has scored a goal for Oregon State, and it was the second time in those four games that she nailed the game-winner on a penalty kick. On Sept. 17, Henderson's penalty kick in the 87th minute handed the Beavers a 3-2 home win over Idaho, Henderson is 4-for-4 on penalty kicks this fall and has five goals overall.
"Katie's been outstanding all season," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "She's done a very good job from the first day - she's got the pace that causes opponents problems."
Oregon State had the better of play against the Jaguars. The Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute on Beth Thomason's unassisted goal from 10 yards out, and OSU went on to outshoot IUPUI 21-4 in the game.
"We scored the early goal and then kind of lost our way," Fennah said. "Their keeper made a couple of real big saves that changed the emotion of the game. It was a game where we got frustrated a bit, but coming away with a win is a real good step."
It was a Beaver mistake that gave the Jaguars their only goal, as OSU misplayed a ball struck by IUPUI's Paige Stuart and it got past Oregon State goalkeeper Jerika Duran to tie the game at 1-1. Duran had to make just two saves in the contest, while IUPUI's Nikki Hackett finished with 10 saves.
OSU then pressured the Jaguars, who were called for a handball in the box to set up Henderson's penalty kick.
"The girl was unfortunate - she stumbled a bit and then got her hand on the ball," Fennah said. "Katie just stepped up and slotted it away."
