Michelle Voiland, who works primarily with the goalkeepers, enters her 11th season as associate head coach with the Oregon State women's soccer program in 2018.
In each of her first four seasons, the Beavers improved their goals against average from 1.26 during her first year, to 0.90 her second season and a school-record 0.56 in 2010. The .56 mark was 13th best in the nation and the team's 0.64 average in 2011 was good for third best in the Pac-12.
In 2012, Voiland worked with a duo of goalies that played in a platoon format for the season's first half. Junior Audrey Bernier-Larose started the first three matches of the regular season, while freshman Sammy Jo Prudhomme made 13 saves in her collegiate debut during a 2-1 win at Cal State Fullerton (Aug. 30). Prudhomme and Bernier-Larose continued the platoon through the beginning of Pac-12 play, until the freshman got the eventual starting nod. Prudhomme would again record double digit saves in a match with her dozen at California (Sept. 30). At the conclusion of the regular season, OSU would be second in the conference in saves (110), while Prudhomme stood just seven stops away from setting a new OSU freshman program record.
The team would finish the season with seven total shutouts (Prudhomme 4, Bernier-Larose 3), while the freshman goalie finished first in the Pac-12 in saves per match avg. (6.46) and second in saves pct. (.832). Prudhomme took home numerous honors in 2012, including twice winning the Pac-12's Defensive Player of the Week honors, as well as being named to the conference's All-Freshman team. She was voted as the team's best newcomer during their post season awards banquet.
During the 2011 season, Voiland coached senior goalkeeper Colleen Boyd to another impressive season. Boyd finished the season with seven shutouts and a 0.68 goals against average, which ranked third in the Pac-12. Voiland helped Boyd to the top of the Oregon State record books for her career goals against average and solo shutouts.
During the school-record 16-win season in 2010, Voiland coached goalkeeper Colleen Boyd to an All-America season in which she set school records with goals against average, 14 shutouts and the most consecutive scoreless minutes at 580 and eight seconds. The Beavers started the season with five consecutive shutouts and also shutout three top-25 teams, including No. 24 Memphis in the first round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
In her second season, she coached a defensive group that posted seven shutouts and then school-record 0.90 goals against average. The defensive effort allowed Oregon State to advance to the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship Sweet 16 for the first time in school history and a No. 21 final ranking in the NSCAA poll.
In her first season at Oregon State, the Beavers posted an impressive 1.26 goals against average and freshman goalkeeper Colleen Boyd ranked among the Pac-10 leaders in several defensive categories.
Prior to Oregon State, Voiland spent three seasons as an assistant coach with FC Saarbrücken, serving as the team's goalkeeper coach after playing for eight seasons with the German soccer club.
Before that, she spent two seasons as a coach for the Nevada Olympic Development Program and served as the head goalkeeper coach for the Nevada South ODP where she was responsible for evaluation, selection and training of the boys and girls goalkeepers of all age groups.
Voiland also served as the assistant coach at Chaparral High School in Las Vegas from 1996 to 1998 where she worked with the boys and girls varsity teams and served as the junior varsity boys and girls head coach. In addition, she founded the Las Vegas Goalkeeper Academy in 1996 and was an assistant coach for three seasons with the Portland Metro Soccer Club (1993-95).
The native of Bellevue, Wash., was a standout soccer player at the University of Portland, where she was the starting goalkeeper and was a four-time All-Conference First Team selection. During her senior season, Voiland led the Pilots to the NCAA Women's College Cup Final Four.
Following her playing days with the Pilots, Voiland played for three seasons in the Nevada ODP before starting her eight-year professional playing career with FC Saarbrücken.
Voiland earned her bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in sociology from Portland in 1995 and holds a USSF National "B" Coaching License and a USSF National Goalkeeping License.
