Mark Massari returned to Oregon State University for his second tenure in July 2014 after serving the previous six years as Director of Athletics at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). He oversees strategic planning, capital projects and internal operations for all 18 Beaver intercollegiate programs and is a member of the executive management team. Massari leads the $42 million Valley Football Center Expansion (March 2017 completion) and supervises football and several Olympic programs.
Since his return to Corvallis, Massari served on the search to hire head football coach Gary Andersen and created the campaign “Commit2Wayne” – increasing men’s basketball season tickets to the highest level in a decade. He also launched Pac-12 Sales, the innovative ticket marketing and fan engagement effort with the conference.
Massari served several roles at Oregon State prior to leaving for UCSB. From 2006-08 he was the Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs, where he was involved in a $115 million capital campaign that included the “Raising Reser” football facility expansions, the construction of the Sports Performance Center and upgrades to Gill Coliseum and Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. From 2002-06 he served as the general manager for Beaver Sports Properties, a division of Learfield Sports.
While at UCSB, he led 20 Division I programs and 400 student-athletes for the Big West Conference school. His tenure included the Gauchos posting an impressive 85 percent student-athlete graduation rate – second highest in the University of California system, and competing in 18 NCAA Championships. He introduced the Gaucho Fund, athletics first-ever giving program and raised over $25 million for program support, scholarships and facility improvements. Massari made several promising coaching hires including former Beaver All-American Andrew Checketts, who guided the baseball team to its first ever appearance in the College World Series.
Prior to OSU, Massari led broadcast sales, marketing and affiliates for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers and its rights holder for three years, and spent five years directing sports marketing and sales at the University of Miami (Fla). Prior to the Hurricanes, he began his career as an intern at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif.
The Northern California native, played linebacker as a four-year football student-athlete at Sacramento State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in history. He later received his master’s degree in sports leadership from Duquesne University.
Mark and his wife Kimberly have a daughter Madeline, a son Joseph and a chocolate lab named Hershey.
