Jonnie Motomochi enters his fourth season with the Oregon State men’s golf team looking to continue the success of a program he played for during his collegiate career.
In his first three years as an assistant coach, the Beavers won the team title at the Duck Invitational, posted 12 top-five finishes and had 10 players earn Pac-12 All-Academic honors.
Individually, Jonas Liebich tied the school record with a 9-under 63 at the Amer Ari Invitational in 2016. Alex Franklin advanced to the NCAA Regional Championships as an individual in 2014 and 2015, and David Fink advanced in 2014. Fink earned All-Pac-12 Second Team honors and Kevin Murphy was named All-Pac-12 Freshman Honorable Mention in Motomochi’s first season as an assistant coach.
A native of Delta, British Columbia, Motomochi played in 35 tournaments in his four-year career with the Beavers and finished with a scoring average of 74.00 in 105 rounds. His best score was a 6-under 65 as a junior at the Pacific Invitational to equal the fourth-lowest round in Oregon State history and his best finish was a tie for seventh at that same event. He shot 17 sub-par rounds and had one top-10 and seven top-20 finishes.
Motomochi was just as successful off the course as he was recognized as the Pac-12 men’s golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2012 and was named to the Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team three times. He was also named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America in 2011 and 2012 and recognized as a Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar in 2011.
He took part in the 2012 Beavers Without Borders trip to Ethiopia in the summer of 2012 and was honored as an Oregon State Everyday Champion on March 14, 2011.
Motomochi graduated from Oregon State in December 2012 with a degree in New Media Communications. After graduation and before being named an assistant coach at Oregon State on July 1, 2013, Motomochi coached youth in his hometown, worked with CPGA professional Kendal Yonemoto and served as a volunteer coach for the Beavers during the second half of the spring season.
He earned his MBA from Oregon State in 2016.
