Mark Hagen is in his first season at Oregon State in 2026 as defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator, arriving in Corvallis with 34 years of collegiate coaching experience — including stops at Louisville, Purdue, Texas, Indiana, Texas A&M and Northern Illinois.
Hagen came to Oregon State after three seasons at Louisville as co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach. He previously spent two seasons as co-defensive coordinator at Purdue (2021-22) and one season as associate head coach for the defense and defensive line coach at Texas (2020).
Coaching Highlights
• Coached Louisville’s Ashton Gillotte to Second Team All-America and First Team All-ACC honors in 2023 (11 sacks); Gillotte was selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs
• Helped direct a Louisville defense that ranked among the nation’s best against the run, limiting opponents to less than 100 rushing yards per game
• As Purdue’s co-defensive coordinator in 2021, oversaw a defensive turnaround that jumped from No. 67 nationally in scoring defense (29.8 ppg) to No. 34 (22.4 ppg); George Karlaftis earned All-America and First Team All-Big Ten honors that year
• Directed a Purdue defense in 2022 that finished in the Top 20 nationally in interceptions (15) and held four opponents to fewer than 100 rushing yards
• Served as Texas A&M’s defensive coordinator in the 2014 AutoZone Liberty Bowl, a victory over West Virginia
• During his first stint at Purdue (2000-10), helped guide the Boilermakers to seven bowl appearances, including the 2001 Rose Bowl and 2004 Capital One Bowl; Purdue ranked among the top four in the Big Ten in rushing defense in each season from 2000-04

Hagen and his wife, Denise, have four daughters: Abby, Emma, Ellie and Ava.
