Turney, Church, Byrd, Howard Have Big Days

Eugene, Ore. – Oregon State junior Michele Turney placed second in the triple jump and senior Allie Church took third in the 100 meters on Saturday to lead the Beavers on the final day of the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field.
“It was a very, very good weekend for us,” coach Kelly Sullivan said. “Overall our team had very good performances and our staff is pretty pleased.”
Already the school record-holder in the triple jump with a mark of 40 feet, 0.75 inches at last year’s Pacific-12 Conference meet, Turney leaped a season-high 38-7.75 on Saturday. It was the third time this season she’s exceeded 38 feet.
Church ran 12.08 in the 100, shaving two-tenths of a second off her season best in the sixth-fastest time in school history. It’s the fastest clocking since the program’s revival during the 2005-06 school year.
Freshman McKenzie Byrd had two top-10 performances. Her 128-10 throw in the hammer upped her No. 4 mark by nearly seven feet; her throw of 139-7 in the javelin now ranks third all-time and was an improvement of more than 13 feet from her previous best.
Freshman Lucinda Howard took fourth in the triple jump in 38-3.50 and moved into second all-time behind Turney. Howard also had a top-10 effort in the long jump on Friday night.
Also, freshmen Ahsha Mootz (400) and Nicole Goecke (800) won their heats. Mootz placed fifth overall in 58.25, the 10th-fastest time in school history. Goecke was sixth in 2:13.48. Junior Maureen Tremblay won her 800 heat on Friday.
The Beavers had 10 top-10 performances overall at the meet. Such marks were set on Friday by Kara Hallock in the heptathlon (5,380 points, third all-time; 14:29 in 100 hurdles, 5th); Morgan Anderson in the 1500 (4:24.55, 2nd) and Kaitlyn Mason (18-8, 6th) and Howard (18-5.25, 8th) in the long jump.
OSU took second to Oregon in the Division I team scoring, 243-173. The Beavers also defeated Gonzaga 292-61; defeated Montana 271-253; defeated Portland State 287-155, and lost to Oregon 257-219 in dual-meet scoring.
The Beavers are idle next weekend. Their second and final home meet of the season is the third annual High Performance Meet, scheduled for May 1 at the Whyte Track & Field Center.
“That’s the crown jewel for us,” Sullivan said. “We are getting a tremendous amount of interest from all over the country for that meet.”
