Eligibility

Initial-Eligibility:Â
In order to be eligible for practice and competition, all incoming first-time college students wishing to be a member of any Oregon State University athletic team MUST register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. The NCAA Eligibility Center is responsible for evaluating high school academic records to determine whether students meet the NCAA initial-eligibility standards.
The basic guidelines for becoming eligible to practice and compete at the Division I level during the first academic year are as follows:
- Graduate from high school
- Attain a minimum high school grade point average of 2.0 in 16 core curriculum courses, and
- Achieve a corresponding sum ACT or SAT score on the NCAA sliding scale index.
The Athletic Compliance Office is responsible for tracking initial-eligibility status with the NCAA Eligibility Center.
Continuing Eligibility:Â
Credit-Hour Requirements
A student-athlete must successfully complete at least six credit hours in each regular academic term to be eligible for competition during the next academic term. This rule also applies to postseason competition and between terms, which takes place between terms.
In addition to the six credit-hour requirement per term of full-time enrollment, you must complete the following credit-hour requirements:
- 24 degree credit-hours during each regular academic year (i.e., between the first day classes in the fall quarter and spring commencement) in which you were enrolled as a full-time student; and
- 36 degree credit-hours prior to the start of your second year (fourth quarter) of full-time enrollment.
Grade-Point Average Requirements
A student-athlete is subject to grade-point average (GPA) requirements at the beginning of the second year (fourth quarter) of enrollment. After this time, the NCAA GPA requirements must be met each quarter. The requirements are as follows:
- Entering the second year of collegiate enrollment: At least 90% of the institution's overall cumulative grade-point average required for graduation.
- Entering the third year of collegiate enrollment: At least 95% of the institution's overall cumulative minimum grade-point average required for graduation.
- Entering the fourth year of collegiate enrollment and thereafter: 100% of the institution's overall cumulative minimum grade-point average required for graduation.
For example, if the minimum GPA requirement for graduation in a degree program is a 2.0, you will need at least 1.80 entering into your second year, a 1.90 entering into your third year, and a 2.0 entering your fourth year of enrollment and every year thereafter.
Percentage of Degree
Entering into your third year of collegiate enrollment, you will be required to meet percentage of degree benchmarks as follows:
- Entering the third year of collegiate enrollment: 40%
- Entering the fourth year of collegiate enrollment: 60%
- Entering the fifth year of collegiate enrollment: 80%
In order to calculate your progress for this requirement, take the total number of degree-applicable hours in your degree program and divide by the total number of hours required and the result is the percentage of the degree you have completed.
It is critical for student-athletes to meet with their academic advisor each term to ensure the courses in which they enroll are degree-applicable. It is also important that student-athletes be cognizant of Oregon State's repeated course policy as a third take of any course means those credits cannot be included towards NCAA minimums. To identify your academic advisor, please contact Academics for Student-Athletes.
