Eligibility for Financial Aid
A student-athlete must meet applicable NCAA, Pac-12 and Oregon State University regulations to be eligible for institutional financial aid. If these regulations are met, the student-athlete may be awarded institutional financial aid during any term in which a student-athlete is in regular attendance under the following conditions:
- The student-athlete is an undergraduate student with eligibility remaining under the five year clock
- The student-athlete is a graduate student with eligibility remaining
- The student-athlete has eligibility remaining for financial aid under the Oregon State University Athletics Department 15 segment rule.
15 Segment Rule
Initially-enrolled, first-year scholarship student athletes are funded to the completion of their first degrees up to a maximum of 15 segments. Transfer student athletes are funded to the completion of their first degrees up to a maximum of 15 segments; the Compliance Office assigns a prorated number of segments based on the number of full-time academic year terms completed prior to OSU. Most student-athletes graduate before their aid is exhausted, and most do not receive post-baccalaureate funding. Participation in the BEST bridge program in the summer prior to a student athlete's initial fulltime enrollment at OSU does not count against the student-athlete's segment allocation. Each quarter in the academic year (Fall, Winter & Spring) counts as one segment, while each summer counts as one-half of a segment.

Exceptions
A student-athlete unable to complete his/her degree within the standard 15 segments may be afforded the opportunity to petition to the Athletics Compliance Committee. The student-athlete must be able to demonstrate why he/she needs additional time to complete the necessary academic course load and must file the petition no later than the end of his/her 12.5/13 segment. The Committee shall have the authority to determine any necessary exceptions (and scholarship amounts) provided to a student-athlete who petitions for additional time and resources.Â
A student-athlete who exhausts his/her 15 segments but has athletic eligibility remaining will be afforded extra segments for required terms prior to and including the final season of competition without petition.
A student-athlete whose primary major is Bioengineering, Biological & Ecological Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Environmental Engineering will be afforded 16 segments because these majors require 192 credits.
A post-eligibility student-athlete who leaves prior to graduation and has segments remaining may return within five years of departure. If the student-athlete leaves the University fully compliant with NCAA benchmarks (Credit Hour Requirements (NCAA Bylaw 14.4.3.1), College/Major Declaration (NCAA Bylaw 14.4.3.1.7), Grade-Point Average Requirements (NCAA Bylaw 14.4.3.3), and Percent of Degree Completion (NCAA Bylaw 14.4.3.2)), he/she may return with the same level of scholarship support as when he/she left. Once enrolled, the student may expect to continue with the same level of scholarship support as long as he/she remains in compliance with NCAA and university benchmarks. If the student-athlete leaves the University not in compliance or not within the specific time frame, he/she will have to petition the Committee for support.
Athletics Grant-In-Aid
A full athletics grant-in-aid is financial aid that consists of tuition, required academic fees, room board, and required course-related textbooks.
Reduction/Cancellation of Institutional Financial Aid
If a student-athlete is receiving institutional financial aid based in any degree on athletics ability, that financial aid MAY be reduced or canceled during the period of the award (e.g., during that academic year or term) only if the student-athlete:
- Renders himself or herself ineligible for intercollegiate competition, or
- Fraudulently misrepresents any information on an application, letter of intent or financial aid agreement, or
- Commits serious misconduct which warrants a substantial disciplinary penalty, or
- Voluntarily quits the sport for personal reasons. In this case, the student-athlete's financial aid may not be given to another student-athlete during the term in which the aid was reduced or canceled.
Institutional financial aid based in any degree on athletics ability MAY NOT be reduced, canceled during the period of the award,
- Based on a student-athlete's ability, performance or contribution to a team's success, or
- Because injury prevents the student-athlete from participating, or
- For any other athletics reason.
Institutional Financial Aid Renewal/Nonrenewal
Aid based in any degree on athletics at Oregon State University is awarded on a one year renewable basis. In rare cases, a student-athlete may sign a multi-year aid agreement, in which case the award is renewable based upon the schedule initially included on the award letter.Â
If a student-athlete is receiving institutional financial aid based upon athletics ability, the institution must notify the student-athlete in writing on or before July 1st whether the aid has been renewed, reduced or not renewed for the next academic year. This written notification must come from the university's financial aid authority and not from the athletics department.
If the institution decides not to renew the aid, or is going to reduce the aid, the institution must notify the student-athlete in writing that he or she has the right to a hearing. This hearing is held before the institutional agency making the award.
