2000 Football Captains Announced

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Three seniors and two juniors have been named as captains for the 2000 Oregon State football season, it was announced Friday by Beaver Football Coach Dennis Erickson.
Terrence Carroll, strong safety, DeLawrence Grant, defensive end, and Darnell Robinson, strong linebacker, are the three senior captains. The two junior captains in 2000 will be quarterback Jonathan Smith and tailback Ken Simonton.
Carroll was also a team captain in 1999, along with Roddy Tompkins and Aaron Wells. Carroll is the first OSU player to be named captain two years in a row since Rich Haggerty in 1986-87.
Carroll, from Houston, Texas, was an honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection in 1999. Robinson, from Sacramento, CA, earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors in 1999. Grant, from Compton, CA, was the Beavers' sack leader on defense in 1999 with six, and tackles for loss with nine.
Simonton, from Pittsburg, CA, is just 39 yards away from becoming OSU's all-time leading rusher with 2,552 yards. Simonton is already the Beavers' career scoring leader with 196 points. He has rushed for more yards than any freshman back in Pac-10 history (1,028 yards in 1998) and more yards than any sophomore back in Pac-10 history (1,486 yards in 1999).
Smith, from Glendora, CA, broke the Beavers' season record for passing (3,053 yards) and total offense (2,957 yards) in 1999. He is second in career passing at OSU with 4,480 yards and third in career total offense with 4,446 yards.
