Corvallis, Ore. - THE FINAL WORD: Oregon State concluded its 98th season of men's basketball with a 13-16 record, including 5-13 in the Pacific-10 Conference (8th-tie/Washington). Head Coach Eddie Payne and his staff were dismissed as the Head Coach one day following the season.
THE NEW COACH: When Oregon State University Director of Athletics Mitch Barnhart announces the hiring of a new coach, he will be introducing OSU's 18th men's basketball head coach. The new person will be only the sixth head coach for the OSU men's basketball program since the 1928-29 season.
ONE WIN SHORT OF A MILESTONE: With the first regular season victory during the 2000-2001 season, Oregon State will reach 1,500 victories all-time. The program is the ninth-winningest in the nation, and has the most wins of any Pacific-10 Conference school.
WHO'S BACK: The new mentor of the Oregon State program should not find the cupboard bare, with eight returning letterwinners and one redshirt-junior returning. The returning cast makes up 75 percent of the 1999-2000 team's scoring, 53 percent of the rebounding, and 75 percent of the assists. Here is a closer look (years represent 2001 season):

Steinthal (3.08/business) and Heide (3.04/business) earned first team recognition, and Petraitis (3.02/business) was a second team member. Oregon State, California, and Stanford each had a conference high three members make the team.
LONG BALL RECORDS FALL: Oregon State set a new school record for three-point field goals converted in one season with 206, and attempted with 571. The team also set a school record for threes attempted in one game with 30 vs. UCLA Jan. 27.
A LITTLE HELP FROM YOUR FRIENDS: Oregon State was impressive in the assist category, averaging 15.4 per game for the season, the highest since the 1993 team had a 15.7 average. The team had a season-high 23 vs. South Carolina State. Sixty-three percent of OSU's field goals had a credited assist, while its opponents have a 60 percent ratio.

His overall record is now 211-197 in 13 seasons at four-year institutions. Payne has also been the head coach at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina where he recorded a record of 103-51 in five seasons, and at East Carolina University for four seasons, posting a record of 70-72. BEAVERS SIGN CANUCK DURING EARLY PERIOD: Oregon State signed North Vancouver, B.C. center Derek Potter to a letter of intent during the fall signing period. Potter stands 6'11" 1/2 and averaged 27 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots last season for Handsworth Secondary School. The Beavers have four scholarships available for the spring period that runs April 5-May 15.
MIKE COKLEY, Fr., Guard: The true-freshman guard played in four games, and scored his first OSU points with a three-pointer late in the game vs. Clemson.
TIM EUHUS, Fr., Forward: Euhus was a walk-on to the basketball program, but he is on a football scholarship as a tight end...redshirted this year in football...practiced two-to-three times a week with the basketball program during the football season...scored 12 points in the season opener vs. Chico State...shot .533 (8-15) from the field...played 20 minutes vs. Idaho...played in 11 of the 18 conference games.
JIMMIE HAYWOOD, Fr., Guard: True-freshman guard was one of three individuals to play in every game...started 11 times...possibly the quickest player at Oregon State since Gary Payton...scored a career-high 12 points at Colorado State and at Arizona...also had an 11-point effort vs. Denver...played either the point or two-guard...averaged 22 minutes per game...shot 7 of 13 (.538) from the field over the final three games, including 5-for-7 from three-point range...he shot .341 (30-88) from beyond the arc for the season, improving to .368 (21-57) during the conference season...had games of 4-for-4 from three-point range at Arizona, and 3-for-3 at Oregon.
JASON HEIDE, Jr., Center: Jason was slowed all season by a sprained right ankle, broken right thumb, and back spasms...he missed four games, and was generally not effective in two others...he broke his thumb against Wyoming (Dec. 20) but was not diagnosed until Dec. 27...averaged 10.7 point and 5.0 rebounds -- third for the team in both categories...over the last four games he averaged 13.8 points, and shot .585 (24-41)...matched his season-high with 10 rebounds vs. Washington...member of the SoCon Holiday Hoops All-Tournament team...matched his career-high with 21 points vs. Eastern Washington and Wyoming...played a career-high 36 minutes vs. Ole Miss...had the team's first double-double for the season, a 14-point, 10-rebound effort vs. Denver...notched his second double-double for the year, and fifth for his career, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds vs. Washington...for his career, Heide is shooting .511 (246-481), averaging 8.6 points, and 4.5 rebounds...First Team Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic Team.
BRIAN JACKSON, Fr., Forward: Jackson made his OSU debut at Colorado State after missing the first five games with a knee injury suffered Nov. 22...he made his first start vs. Eastern Washington Dec. 15...began his career with 12 points and four rebounds at Colorado State...scored a team-high 20 points vs. Denver...had his first career double-double, scoring 32 points and grabbing 10 rebounds vs. Texas A&M-CC, followed by a 17-point, 10 rebound effort vs. Oregon...led the team in scoring six times...the 32 points are the most ever by a Beaver freshman...the 32-point game ranked sixth in the Pac-10...he has 295 points, the seventh-highest total for a freshman at OSU...plagued by foul problems, and was disqualified four times...finished second for the team for scoring (12.5) and second for rebounding (5.1)...had started 20 consecutive games before the Mar. 4 Arizona State game where he did not start due to senior night...hit just 10 of 44 (.227) from the field over the last six games...had a pair of double-doubles for the season...he averaged 26.1 minutes per game, second only to Tanner on the team.
CLIFTON JONES, Sr., Forward: Jones averaged 8.3 points and a team-high 5.7 rebounds...concluded his career with 67 career blocked shots, tied for fifth all-time at OSU...in four years of post-high school basketball, he rejected 287 shots...shot .636 from the field for the season, and .611 for his OSU career...had a season-high 15 points vs. Eastern Washington...scored 13 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds at Washington...tied his career-high with four assists vs. South Carolina State...second for the team for steals with 45...fouled out of seven conference games, including five of the last 10...two double-doubles this season, at UCLA and at Washington.
JOSIAH LAKE, Sr., Guard: Lake was a walk-on...scored seven points in the season opener vs. Chico State, and at USC...averaged 2.5 points for the year...started his first OSU game of his career Feb. 17 against Washington and responded with six points in 22 minutes...played 160 minutes in the last eight games, after playing just one minute in the previous seven...played a career-high 30 minutes at UCLA...had a career-high six rebounds vs. Washington State..
ADAM MASTEN, So., Guard: Masten was the lone sophomore in the program...scored a career-high 15 points at Washington State...has 15 career starts, including 13 games this season...fourth for the team for assists with 46...had a career-high four steals vs. Texas A&M--Corpus Christi...attempted just 11 field goals in his last 82 minutes...played just 38 minutes over the last nine games...played a career-high 35 minutes at Washington...tied his career-high with seven rebounds vs. UCLA, plus he added seven points.
RAMUNAS PETRAITS, Sr., Guard: Ramunas averaged 4.9 points for the season...did not play at UCLA, marking the first time he has not had playing time other than for an injury in his career...had his streak of starting every game of his OSU career snapped at 34 games, after he did not play vs. Eastern Washington due to a bruised right hip...matched his career-high with 17 points at Washington...also had a 15-point game vs. South Carolina State, and had a team-high 13 vs. Clemson...tallied a season-high eight rebounds vs. Utah...Second Team Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic Team.
JOSH STEINTHAL, Jr., Guard: Steinthal concluded the year fourth all-time at OSU for career threes with 114...tallied a team-high 18 points vs. Chico State, and grabbed a career-high six rebounds...matched his season-high 18 points vs. Washington State, after scoring 16 two nights earlier vs. Washington...averaged 9.0 points for the season, but over the last seven games averaged 14.3 points...shot .407 from the field for the season, but in that seven-game season-ending stretch he converted .492 (31-63)...his three-point field goal percentage over the last seven games was .543( 25-46)...63 percent of his field goal attempts were from three-point range...he made at least four three-point field goals in seven games this season, including six of the last seven...first team Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic Team.
DEAUNDRA TANNER, Jr., Guard: Tanner was selected to the NABC District 14 Second Team...hit the game-winning three-point basket at the buzzer to beat No. 3 Arizona March 2 in Gill Coliseum...scored a career-high 28 points vs. California Jan. 15...scored 24 points at Utah, and had 23 points at Colorado State...led the team for scoring at 14.2 points per game and for assists with 143 (5.1)...had a career-high 10 assists vs. Wyoming...had five games this season (Utah, Colorado State, Cal, UCLA, Oregon) where he has made four three-point field goals...recorded the team's second double-double when he had 21 points and 10 assists against Wyoming...team-leader for free throw shooting, hitting 79 of 101 (.782)...shot .411 (60-146) from the three-point stripe...third all-time at OSU for threes with 148...has a career three-point field goal percentage of .373 (148-397)...his 60 threes this season is second for a single season at OSU...eighth all-time at OSU for thefts with 150...did not score at UCLA, only the second time in his OSU career he has been held scoreless...he has 1,075 career points, 21st all-time at OSU...played a career-high 41 minutes vs. Arizona March 2.
GEORGE von BACKSTROM, Sr., Center: George averaged 2.4 points and 1.4 rebounds...shooting .465 (20-43) from the field...had a season-high eight points vs. South Carolina State and Stanford...played a season-high 17 minutes vs. Cal...started at Arizona, his first start of the season.
IYAN WALKER, Sr., Forward: Iyan was a member of the program for five years...played in 87 career games...scored nine points with a career-high eight rebounds vs. Chico State...shot .393 from the field (11-28)...dislocated his patella (knee-cap) vs. Clemson, and missed four games...played 10 minutes vs. Arizona, the most he played during the conference season.
