Men's Basketball Concludes Home Schedule
Feb. 29, 2000
Corvallis, Ore. - THE SCHEDULE: Oregon State (12-14, 4-11 in Pac-10) concludes its 1999-2000 home schedule hosting the No. 3 Arizona Wildcats (24-4, 14-1) Thurs., March 2 and the Arizona State Sun Devils (16-10, 8-6) Sat., March 4. Both games are scheduled for 7:07 p.m. from Ralph Miller Court in Gill Coliseum.
STREAKS: Oregon State is looking to break a two-game losing streak, as a result of falling to USC and UCLA last week in Los Angeles. The Beavers have won two straight at home.
SENIORS LAST HOME GAMES: Five seniors will be playing their last home games in Gill Coliseum this week. The list includes Clifton Jones, Josiah Lake, Ramunas Petraitis, Iyan Walker, and George von Backstrom. The five players, and team manager Will Boshuizen will be honored prior to Saturday's game. The Beavers will have three scholarships available during the spring signing period in April and early May. Lake is a walk-on, and the coaching staff signed one player during the early period in the fall.
IT MUST BE THE SOCKS: Ever since junior guard Josh Steinthal has sported the "high" socks Feb. 17 vs. Washington, he has made 16 of 31 (.516) from three-point range. Coming into the Washington game, Steinthal was shooting .330 from the three-point arc for the season, including 4-for-15 (.267) in the previous four games. His recent barrage has upped his percentage for the season to .390.
WHAT IS WITH THIS FEBRUARY THING? Oregon State just concluded the month of February playing six of eight games on the road, this after playing five of seven games away from Gill Coliseum in February last season. The last time the Beavers played six conference games on the road in one month was, you guessed it, February 1996. The 2001 schedule for the Valentine's month is kinder, with six of eight at home.
TIRED LEGS: Oregon State's shooting percentage over the last three games has been significantly lower than its season percentage. The Beavers have shot .386 from the field over their last three contests, compared to .442 for the season.
OSU VS. ARIZONA SERIES: Arizona has a 33-14 advantage in the series and has won 19 of the last 20. Michael Wright scored a game-high 22 points and Loren Woods added 15 points and nine boards in Arizona's 90-73 victory at the McKale Center Feb. 5. Brian Jackson scored 18 points to pace OSU. The Beavers upset the then No. 9 Wildcats 60-59 in Corvallis last season in one of the most exciting games in recent memory. OSU outscored UA 30-21 in the second half and scored the game's final four points to post the victory. A.J. Bramlett had an opportunity to give Arizona the lead with 3.1 seconds remaining, but missed both free throws. Deaundra Tanner scored 16 points and had nine assists in the victory, while Arizona's Richard Jefferson tallied 20 points and Michael Wright added 13 points and 12 rebounds.
OSU VS. ARIZONA STATE SERIES: OSU leads all-time 32-21, with the teams splitting the season series the last three years, the Beavers will be attempting to make it four years. Eddie House scored 19 points to lead ASU to a 75-64 win at the Wells Fargo Arena Feb. 3, while OSU's Deaundra Tanner added 19 for OSU. The Sun Devils had a 41-31 advantage in rebounding. The teams also combined for a cold 9-for-34 (.265) night from three-point range. The Beavers routed ASU last season in Corvallis, 81-51, the largest margin of victory in a conference game for OSU since its 106-66 win at Washington in 1989. OSU shot .682 (15-22) in the second half, and .519 for the game, to post the victory. Tanner scored 18 points, Jason Heide had 16, and Ramunas Petraitis had 15 in the win. The only Sun Devil in double figures was Bobby Lazor with 14.

INJURY REPORT: Oregon State played virtually an injury-free 1998-99, but that has not been the case this season. Freshman forward Brian Jackson missed the first five games of the season with a knee injury, junior center Jason Heide missed four games and was generally ineffective in two other contests with a broken right thumb and sprained right ankle, senior forward Iyan Walker was sidelined 10 games with two knee injuries, and senior guard/forward Ramunas Petraitis missed one game with a bruised hip.
THREE-POINT THREAT: Oregon State has set a new school record for three-point field goals converted in one season with 183 (2nd in Pac-10), and attempted with 518 (most in the Pac-10). The team also set a school record for threes attempted in one game with 30 vs. UCLA Jan. 27. The Beavers entered the week tied for third in the Pac-10 for percentage at .353. OSU entered the week averaging one three attempt per every 2.8 field goal attempts, the highest ratio in the conference. The rest of the league follows with Stanford (2.9), Oregon (3.1), Washington State (3.1), USC (3.6), California (3.6), UCLA (3.7), Washington (3.9), Arizona (4.1), and Arizona State (4.6).
A LITTLE HELP FROM YOUR FRIENDS: Oregon State continues to be impressive in the assist category, averaging 15.5 per game. The team had a season-high 23 vs. South Carolina State. The Beavers were ninth in the Pac-10 last year for assists at 12.6 per game, and for the season haven't averaged over 15 since 1992-93 (15.7). OSU's opponents are averaging 13.0. Sixty-three percent of OSU's field goals have had a credited assist, while its opponents have a 56 percent ratio.
BALANCED ATTACK: Oregon State enters game 27 of the season with a balanced attack in all facets of the game. The Beavers have had a different leading scorer six times (4 times all of last season), a different leading rebounder eight times (4 times all of last season), and a different player leading in the assists and steals categories six times.
SO, THAT'S WHAT A DEADBALL REBOUND IS: Oregon State entered the week eighth in the Pac-10 Conference for free throw percentage at .669. The .669 percentage is a dramatic improvement over the last four seasons, when the team posted percentages of .617 (1999), .603 (1998), .619 (1997), and .629 (1996).
DOUBLE-DOUBLE BEAVERS: The following list includes Beavers who have achieved double-doubles this season:
