LONG BEACH, Calif. - Josh Proctor went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Ethan Kleinschmit struck out six across five innings as No. 10 Oregon State defeated Long Beach State 7-2 Friday night at Blair Field.
Proctor led an Oregon State offense that produced 12 hits and drew five walks against a Long Beach State pitching staff that threw 161 pitches. The Beavers spread the damage across seven innings, scoring in five different frames and showing patience against starter Ka'imi Kahalekai, who walked three and was charged with five runs — four earned — over 5 2/3 innings.
Adam Haight added a 2-for-5 night with a double and an RBI, while Ethan Porter reached base three times on two hits and a walk. Jacob Galloway and Paul Vazquez also each drove in a run on sacrifice flies.
Proctor opened the scoring in the second inning, singling through the left side to score Porter from second base. Galloway followed with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Haight, putting Oregon State ahead 2-0.
The Beavers added a third run in the third without a hit. Porter reached on a throwing error by Long Beach State shortstop Trotter Enright, allowing Singer to score from second. The run was unearned.
Oregon State scored twice in the fifth on a pair of wild pitches and a sacrifice fly. Talt scored first on a wild pitch, and Singer — who had walked earlier and advanced on the same pitch — came home on a Vazquez sacrifice fly to left to push the lead to 5-0.
Long Beach State (17-30) responded in the sixth with back-to-back RBI singles. Camden Gasser singled to left to score Conner Stewart, and Enright drove in Damon Valdez with a single through the left side to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Oregon State (38-11) pushed back in the seventh. Vazquez singled through the left side and Porter walked. Haight's flyout to left moved Vazquez to third, and Proctor's infield single to third scored Vazquez to make it 6-2.
The Beavers closed out the scoring in the ninth. Bryce Hubbard singled to second base, and Jace Miller entered as a pinch runner. Jacob Krieg followed with a single to left, and Haight doubled to left center to score Miller and set the final at 7-2.
Kleinschmit (8-2) allowed four hits and two earned runs on 85 pitches, walking one in five innings of work. Isaac Yeager followed with two innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out one.
Wyatt Queen closed with two scoreless innings, striking out six while allowing one hit and two walks.
The Oregon State staff combined for 13 strikeouts and held Long Beach State to a 7-for-33 showing at the plate.
