BOISE, Idaho – The Oregon State volleyball team closed the Boise State Classic – and second weekend of the season – with a gritty sweep of the homestanding Broncos on Saturday (27-25, 25-23, 25-20).
The Beavers fought back from late deficits of six and four in the first and second sets, respectively on the way to a win over its future Pac-12 opponent.
"Congrats to this team, coming from behind in each set to win shows the grit we had throughout the match," said head coach Lindsey Behonick. "Alana Marrs and Lauren Rumel's offensive performance put us in the driver's seat as well as Annika's defensive blocking performance. We are excited to compete again and even better that it's back home in Gill!"
"We had a very balanced offense from our setters and hitters along with good pressure from the service line," said head coach Lindsey Behonick. "(I'm) excited for the momentum of this win to carry."
Lauren Rumel (15 kills) and Alana Marrs (11 kills) along with a combined 39 assists from setters – Jackie Matias (25) and Emma Lilo (19) on the way to the second sweep of the weekend. Rumel and Matias led on the other side of the ball, with seven digs apiece while Marrs had a team-best six blocks.
For their play this week, Marrs and Rumel were named to the all-tournament team.
Playing from behind in the majority of the first set, the Beavers (2-3) turned it around with a 7-2 run to turn a five-point hole to a 24-all ballgame. Three Rumel kills with a Marrs solo block sealed the set win at 27-25, completing the gritty comeback. During the lengthy run, Rumel and Cheyenne Green were vital with four combined kills. Boise State was limited to a .143 clip with help from Tia Shum's five first-set digs and three blocks from Nathalie Scholz.
Facing another late deficit when down by four at 19-15, Oregon State flipped the script again with a 10-4 run to put the Broncos on the brink with a second set win. Following one last BSU kill of the frame to make it 23-21, it was all Oregon State to follow. A joint block from Annika Hester and Marrs got the Beavers on a roll to the set win, which also included a kill from Matias.
Oregon State closed out the Broncos in the third, holding their hosts to just a .243 clip behind 15 digs, including three each by Matias and Lilo. Rumel and Maëli Cormier paced the offense with four kills each, including getting the Beavs to the final set point of the day. The Beavers trailed by as many as four early but used a timely 4-0 run to turn the tides of the match.
Gill Coliseum awaits as the Beavers will open the home slate this week for the ASICS Invitational. Action starts on Thursday, September 11 at 6:30 p.m. against Montana State. All of the home matches can be seen on ESPN+.
