CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team put a third consecutive win – and sweep – on Thursday evening, dispatching Montana State in the ASICS Invitational Opener.
A .400-hitting Beaver offense helped secure a clean sweep for Oregon State (3-3) with the 25-14, 25-12, 25-21 scoreline. Lauren Rumel (19) and Maëli Cormier (10) led the Beavers in kills while Emma Lilo and Jackie Matias dished a combined 41 assists to keep the attack up. With a team-best 10 kills, Tia Shum led the defensive effort that held Montana State to just a measly .122 hitting rate.
Despite falling behind early in the first for the second match in a row, the Beavers four runs of 3-0 or better, including a 6-0 dash, to secure the 11-point frame win at 25-14. Rumel started her night with a set-leading six kills and was closely followed with four from Cormier and three from Alana Marrs. The Bobcats were stifled with a .160 hitting clip in the set – thanks to 13 digs from the Beaver defense.
Helping on both sides, Rumel added five of her eight total digs in the second to force the Bobcats to a negative hitting rate (-.086) in the second on the way to a 25-12 set win. Once again playing from behind at 0-1, the Beavers wasted little time in breaking the frame open, building a lead as large as 10 at 20-10 before letting it balloon to the final ledger of 13 at 25-12. Rumel complemented her five digs with five more digs, once again pacing the offense.
The Beavers secured their third consecutive sweep with a hard-fought third set, battling through three ties and eventually winning, 25-21. Oregon State's offense was strong once again with a combined 18 kills from a trio of Cormier, Annika Hester and Rumel while Lilo and Matias added 19 assists toward a .415 clip. Shum's six digs led an effort that kept the Bobcats at bay, despite them hitting close to .300 (.289) in the frame. Both teams traded off scoring runs before an Oregon State 4-0 run at 18-17 broke open and held on for the win.
With the win, Oregon State improved to 2-1 in home openers – with both being sweeps - under the direction of Lindsey Behonick.
Oregon State will continue action in the ASICS Invitational tomorrow evening when they host UC Irvine at 6:30. The match can be seen on ESPN+.
