Beavers Split Saturday One-Run Games
March 01, 2025 | Softball
PHOENIX – Oregon State split their third day in Arizona at the ASU/GCU Invitational on Saturday, defeating Seattle U by a 3-2 line before falling short to host Grand Canyon by a 1-0 score.
Game 1: Oregon State 3, Seattle U 2
Facing a late deficit for the second game in a row, the Beavers battled their way back with three runs in the sixth for the 3-2 win over the Redhawks.
Seattle U – with solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings – looked to be on their way to a second win is many games this season over Oregon State before the Beavers found a late-inning spark.
Keeping up her momentum from Friday, Nicole Donahue started the sixth with a leadoff double to center before being moved over on Samantha Gutierrez's single to the outfield just a few batters later. Justice Flores – pinch running for Lici Campbell after she took a walk – dashed home to tie it off a Jaeya Butler sacrifice fly. Following taking a base on balls, Paige Bambarger found her way home – as the winning run – from first off a throwing error on Tristian Thompson's single.
Ellie Garcia (5-3) finished her complete game with a spotless seventh to secure the win. The Chino, Calif., native was tagged for both runs on four hits and three walks but fanned three.
Game 2: Grand Canyon 1, Oregon State 0
Despite a career-high 10 strikeouts from Logan Hulon against the Antelopes, the Beavers could not generate the offense needed for run support.
Just three Beavers – Butler, Ella Dardis and Howey – recorded hit in the game but Donahue recorded a game-high three walks off Antelope pitchers.
Throwing the game's 6.0 frames, Hulon (2-7) allowed the one run – a solo home run in the sixth – on six hits but issued just one walk along with the 10 strikeouts. Hulon's double-digit Ks surpassed a mark that was previously set last March at then-eighth-ranked Washington, when she fanned nine Huskies.
The Beavers will close the ASU/GCU Invitational against former Pac-12 foe Arizona State tomorrow. First pitch from Farrington Stadium against the Sun Devils is slated for 11:30 a.m. PT and can be seen on ESPN+.
