
Beavers Top Zags in 5-4 Thriller

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Oregon State men's soccer team claimed a 5-4 victory over Gonzaga in a wild back-and-forth match Saturday evening in Spokane, Wash.
Andrew De Gannes scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 85th minute, breaking a late 4-4 deadlock.
The Beavers scored the first two goals early in the match, as Fran Cortijo and Tim Hoffman found the net within the first 17 minutes. The Bulldogs answered by scoring three-straight before the break to take the lead.
Arnau Farnos leveled the score in the second half, netting his 10th of the season. After the Bulldogs reclaimed the lead Sava Catlett notched his first collegiate goal in the 77th minute, to set up De Gannes' game winner.
With the win, Oregon State moved to 7-3-2 on the season and 3-0-2 in conference play. As a team, the Beavers dominated the scoring chances, out-shooting Gonzaga 15-5 overall and 10-4 in shots on goal.
Oregon State wasted little time opening the scoring, as Cortijo curled one home from the top of the box less than three minutes into the contest. Hoffman had a scoring chance about ten minutes later, but his effort from a tight angle was just outside the post.
The Beavers added a second in the 17th minute, as Cortijo played Hoffman in on goal for the freshman's second goal of the season. The Bulldogs pulled one back in the 20th to make the score 2-1. Gonzaga proceeded to level the score in the 28th.
The Bulldogs scored a third on a set piece just before the break, to head to the intermission leading 3-2.
Oregon State had a chance to level the score on a penalty kick in the 61st minute, but the effort was saved. Farnos evened the score in the 67th, putting a shot past the keeper from 14 yards out.
The Beavers got on the front-foot from there, tilting the field and creating multiple scoring chances, but Gonzaga scored against the run of play to reclaim the advantage in the 74th. Catlett found the net in the 77th from point-blank range off a cross from De Gannes.
Oregon State was awarded a penalty kick in the 85th minute after a VAR review of a Gonzaga hand ball inside the 18-yard box. De Gannes stepped up and slotted it home to secure the OSU victory.
The Beavers will hit the road again next weekend to take on Seattle U.
