Cougars Beat Beavs in Pullman
January 04, 2025 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State couldn't find a rhythm on offense for much of Saturday's game, the Beavers' fourth in eight days, in a 66-52 loss at Washington State.
Â
The Beavs close the conference-opening stretch of four games in eight days with a 3-1 mark and with a 2-1 record in road games against the WCC preseason poll's top-three teams.
Â
Kelsey Rees led the Beavers with 17 points, her fifth consecutive game with 15+ points, and grabbed 11 rebounds for her second straight double-double. Catarina Ferreira used her veteran guile to score 14 points on a day where her shot wasn't falling with an 8-for-10 day at the free throw line.
Â
The Cougars couldn't miss for much of the first quarter, jumping out to a 23-10 lead while making half of their shots and four threes. Defensive adjustments helped the Beavs bounce back in the second quarter, holding WSU to 11 points and 25 percent shooting from the floor.
Â
Washington State led at the break 34-19 as the Beavs offensive struggles persisted in the second quarter. OSU reduced their giveaways and got open shots at points in the frame but couldn't get them to fall.
Â
Marotte and Rees found some offensive rhythm in the third quarter, scoring five points apiece. Marotte was the third Beaver in double figures with 11 points, also grabbing five rebounds and dishing three assists. The Beavs held the Cougars without a basket for five minutes in the frame to stay in the game and have a shot in the fourth.
Â
WSU put the game away in the opening minutes of the final quarter, getting back-to-back three-pointers to stretch its lead to 20 at 53-33. Oregon State battled down the stretch with Tiara Bolden keying a run of five straight made baskets, but OSU couldn't manage another comeback to close the eight-day opening stretch of league-play.
Â
The Beavs return home on Thursday, battling the conference's lone remaining undefeated team in league play: San Francisco. The Beavs and Dons tip at 6 p.m. Fans can get tickets on beavertickets.com.
