Beavers Take Down No. 16 Gonzaga in Overtime

CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men's basketball team took a 97-89 overtime win over No. 16 Gonzaga Thursday evening in an instant classic at Gill Coliseum.
Michael Rataj had a career-high 29 points, including 10 in the overtime period. He finished the night with seven rebounds and went 9-for-15 from the floor. Nate Kingz ended his night 6-for-9 from the floor and finished with 20 points.
Parsa Fallah had 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting, while Damarco Minor had 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting to go with four assists.
Josiah Lake II had 11 points and three steals, including a pair of takeaways in overtime that were crucial in helping the Beavers secure the win.
Oregon State led the contest late in regulation, but Gonzaga knocked down a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to force the extra period. Liutauras Lelevicius converted a layup with 36 seconds left in overtime to put the Beavers up by four, and OSU was able to knock down free throws down the stretch to claim the victory.
As a team, Oregon State shot 58.5 percent in the contest, while holding Gonzaga to 41.7 percent shooting.
The Beavers hit their first five shots of the contest to open up a 13-7 lead heading into the game's first media timeout. The Bulldogs answered with some strong defense, as they led 16-15 at the under-12 break.
The teams traded punches from there, with Oregon State using a 6-0 run to snatch a 25-21 advantage. Gonzaga hit a 3-pointer as the halftime buzzer sounded to send the sides to the break with the Beavers leading 46-45.
Kingz had 17 points at the intermission.
The teams continued to go back-and-forth in the second half, as neither side extended its edge beyond six points. Gonzaga led 77-74 with 3:11 to go, but Oregon State scored five-straight points to go up 79-77 with 91 seconds left.
The Bulldogs got within one on a 3-pointer with 21 seconds to go, and knocked down a 3-pointer with five seconds left to force overtime.
The extra frame went back-and-forth until Lelevicius put Oregon State up two possessions with less than a minute left. The Beavers were able to close out the game from there.
The Beavers are back on the road Saturday to take on San Francisco.
