Oregon State Q&A: Rebecca Kim
July 01, 2024 | Women's Golf
Rebecca Kim, a native of South Surrey, B.C., just completed her freshman season with the Oregon State women's golf team and helped lead the team to the NCAA Regionals and NCAA National Championships.
Â
She competed in 11 tournaments and had a scoring average of 78.43 in 30 rounds. Her best finish was a tie for 38th place at the Leadership and Golf Invitational and her best score was a 1-over 73 in the first round at that same event.
Â
Kim recently participated in a Q&A with OSUBeavers.com. Here's what she had to say:
Â
Do you remember the first time you stepped on the Oregon State campus and what it meant to you?
Rebecca Kim: I first stepped on campus during my official visit and I remember feeling anxious and excited.
Â
When did you know you wanted to be a student-athlete at the college level? What drew you to it?
RK: I knew I wanted to be a student-athlete when I was 13 and I was drawn to it because of the ability to compete at a higher level and play for a team and school.
Â
What's one thing you wish more people knew about women's golf and what it takes to be competitive?
RK: I think I wish more people knew the challenges of golf mentally and how it is difficult for other reasons than a lot of other sports due to the fact that it is not reactional.
Â
If you could change one rule about golf, what would it be and why?
RK: I don't know if this counts but I would make golf shorter with maybe 10 or 12 holes instead of 18.
Â
What does it mean to you to wear the Orange and Black?
RK: It is a privilege that I have dreamed of and not something that I take for granted. I am so grateful to represent OSU and play for a school that I am proud of.
Â
If you could pick any other sport to play, what would it be and why?
RK: Maybe archery because I think that there are a lot of principles and mental skills that are similar. I also think fencing would be sick.
Â
What drives you to succeed?
RK: I'm driven by the want to help my team succeed and continue to accomplish my goal for myself.
Â
What makes you want to be successful off the course? What drives your success in the classroom?
RK: I think that placing importance on school and setting goals for my academics as well has led to success.
Â
If you could have dinner with three athletes, dead or alive, who would they be?
RK: Tiger Woods, Lydia Ko, Wayne Gretzky
Â
Who did you look up to growing up? What made you look up to them?
RK: I looked up to my mom because of her determination and her selflessness to provide and help her children succeed.
Â
Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
RK: I hope to be a doctor helping people back in my home country of Canada.
Â
What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given? And who gave it to you?
RK: The best piece of advice I was given was from my Dad and he said to not worry about the results and to trust in my preparation.
Â
What kind of mark do you want to leave from your time in Corvallis?
RK: I hope to create a positive and joyous vibe on my team and create a culture of supporting one another both on and off the course.
Â
Name your top three things to do in Oregon when you're not playing or studying.
RK: I like to go for walks, hang out with friends, and cook.
Â
What are your favorite topping(s) on a hot dog?
RK: Mustard
Â
How about ice cream. What do you have to put on it?
RK: Not much of a toppings person but definitely gotta get a waffle cone.
Â
Your preferred pre-competition meal?
RK: A good breakfast burrito and coffee.
Â
What are your top-three favorite movies?
RK: Sound of Music, La La Land, and Star Wars Saga
Â
What's in your pre-event playlist?
RK: Anything Bruno Mars
