Kmatz Throws A Gem As Beavers Down UC Irvine 5-3
June 01, 2024 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Jacob Kmatz scattered three hits and a run in seven innings and Travis Bazzana hit his 28th home run of the season as Oregon State defeated UC Irvine, 5-3, Saturday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The Beavers, with the win, improved to 44-14 on the year and are 2-0 at the Corvallis Regional. OSU needs one more win to advance to an NCAA Super Regional.
Kmatz struck out nine for his seventh win of the season. He struck out the first five batters he faced and limited the Anteaters (44-13) to a fifth-inning run-scoring double by Woody Hadeen.
He was backed by Bazzana, who hit a towering third-inning home run, and Dallas Macias, who picked up a two-run single on the fifth. Bazzana's blast scored two to put the Beavers on the board first.
Macias battled back from an 0-2 count and singled past second on his fourth pitch of the at bat. That pushed the Beavers to a 4-1 advantage.
OSU scored an insurance run on a double play in the seventh, which was key as UC Irvine plated two in the eighth. Bridger Holmes stemmed the Irvine rally in the eighth, and recorded the game's last three outs for his 13th save of the season.
