Beavers Off To Great Start At NCAA Regionals

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Kyra Ly and Raya Nakao both fired a 3-under 69 to lead the Oregon State women's golf team in the first round of the NCAA Division I Regionals on Monday.
Ly (3-under 69), Nakao (3-under 69) and Chayse Gomez (1-under 71) all carded under-par rounds to lead the Beavers to a great start at the three-day, 54-hole postseason event. Ly and Nakao are both tied for fourth place on the individual leaderboard, while Gomez is tied for 16th.
Oregon State finished the day with a 3-under 285 at the par-72, 6,297-yard Bermuda Run Country Club and is tied with Texas for fifth place. Wake Forest (11-under 277), Tennessee (10-under 278), Ole Miss (5-under 283) and Mississippi State (5-under 283) hold the top four spots with 36 holes to play.
The top five teams in the 12-team field and the low individual not on an advancing team will advance to compete in the NCAA National Championships to be played May 17-22 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 5:00 a.m. PT (8:00 a.m. ET) on Tuesday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com. Oregon State will start on the 10th hole at 5:00 a.m. PT and be paired with Mississippi State and Texas.
Ly had a team-best five birdies in the first round, to go with two bogeys, for her 3-under 69. The sophomore now has 12 sub-par scores this season, after finishing her freshman campaign with three, with three Top 10 finishes, including a share of the individual title at the Meadow Club Invitational.
Nakao, a true freshman, continued her sensational first year at Oregon State with a 3-under 69 that included four birdies and only one bogey. She led the team with a scoring average of 72.14 entering the regionals and upped her rounds in red figures to 11 this season.
Gomez, a fifth-year senior, started the round bogey-bogey but stayed locked in with three birdies and 13 pars the rest of the way to post a 1-under 71. She has six career Top 10 finishes and 33 under-par scores and has played her best golf this season in the second and third rounds.
Madde Sund had the final score for the Beavers on the day with a 4-over 76, including a birdie on the par-4 14th hole. This is her third time competing at the NCAA Regionals. She was spectacular at the event last season with all three rounds in red figures to finish in a tie for seventh place with a 6-under 210.
True freshman Rebecca Kim had one birdie in the first round, on the par-4 14th hole, and finished with an 11-over 83.
