March 22, 2024 | Wrestling
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Trey Munoz – for the second consecutive season – clinched All-American honors as he wrestled himself into the consolation semifinals to wrap the NCAA Championships up.
Munoz used wins via technical fall and decision to book his spot in the final eight of the 184-lb. class. In the opening round, he soundly defeated Gardner-Webb's Jha'Quan Anderson by a 20-5 margin, having built a 13-3 lead after the first two periods – and cemented it with one last takedown to clinch it with 35 seconds left. Locking up the riding time in the third period of match two, he used an early 4-0 lead to put away Columbia's Aaron Ayzeroff.
The 184-pounder fell by major decision to top-ranked and undefeated Parker Keckeisen by major decision at 10-2. Munoz battled closely with the number one seed before he was taken down one last time as the time expired.
Munoz is just the first Beaver to achieve All-American honors in consecutive seasons since Ronnie Bresser and Amar Dhesi both did it in 2018 and 2019. Prior to that, Scott Sakaguchi achieved the feat in 2012 and 2013.
Cleveland Belton (141) bowed out from the competition in the fourth round in the consolation bracket after a major decision loss to NC State's Ryan Jack at 9-0. He reached the round following a thrilling win in a tiebreak over Mitch Moore of Rutgers by a 6-4 margin.
In the 197 lb. bracket, Justin Rademacher's first NCAA journey ended with a loss by decision at 7-2 to Rutgers' John Poznanski in the second round of the consolation bracket.
The Beavers sit in 23rd place with 13.5 points.
Munoz will wrap competition at the NCAA Championships tomorrow, with action set to start at 8 a.m. PT. The action can be seen on ESPN+ and ESPNU.
