Beavers Drop Series Finale In Salt Lake City
March 17, 2024 | Baseball
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Travis Bazzana hit two home runs while Micah McDowell and Mason Guerra each went deep once in Oregon State's 14-11 loss to Utah Sunday afternoon in the three-game series finale at Smith's Ballpark.
Bazzana finished the day 5-for-6 with three runs and five runs batted in. He doubled in the first, hit a two-run home run in the second, drove in three on a long ball in the third, singled in the seventh and singled again in the ninth.
McDowell homered immediately after Bazzana in the third, sending the Beavers to a 9-0 lead. Utah, however, chipped away at the Beavers' advantage with a six-run fourth inning. Then, after the Beavers scored their 10th run on a McDowell sacrifice fly, the Utes scored a pair in the fifth and one more in the sixth to pull within one.
Utah (12-6 overall, 3-3 Pac-12 Conference) went ahead for good with five runs in the seventh.
Guerra hit the first pitch he saw in the eighth for his third home run of the season. The Beavers then put two on with two out in the ninth but Utah's Micah Ashman got McDowell to fly out to center to end the game.
AJ Hutcheson was charged with the loss to drop to 1-2 on the year. Randon Hostert, meanwhile, took the win for Utah, improving to 3-1.
Bazzana's five hits led the OSU (17-2, 2-1) offensive attack, which finished with 17 as a team. Jabin Trosky tallied four hits while McDowell and Guerra had two apiece.
Despite Sunday's loss, the Beavers still took the series after defeating Utah 7-5 on Friday and 8-1 on Saturday.
