February 20, 2024 | Women's Gymnastics
Jade Carey (Gymnast of the Week) and Sophia Esposito (Newcomer of the Week) both earned their third weekly recognition of the 2024 season.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Jade Carey and Sophia Esposito were both recognized as part of the Pac-12 weekly awards, the conference announced on Tuesday. Both competed in the all-around during a 197.100 performance that resulted in a team victory over Stanford, a result that saw Oregon State jump up two spots to No. 17 in the national rankings.
Carey officially surpassed 100 career event titles with four against the Cardinal. After posting a 9.85 on vault in the first rotation, she scored a meet-high 9.95 on the bars before being given a 9.925 on both beam and floor; with a 39.650, Carey also won the all-around event title.
The Phoenix, Ariz., native is now up to 101 event titles in her career and is within striking distance of the program record, 116, which is currently held by Chari Knight. Tuesday's recognition was also Carey's third of the season, having earned back-to-back Specialist of the Week awards after the first two meets of the season.
Esposito competed on the all-around for the second-consecutive week, finishing just behind Carey in the all-around event title race with a 39.450. Her meet started with a 9.875 on vault before leading off the bars rotation with a 9.825. In the third rotation, Esposito was credited with a 9.85 on the beam before rounding out the meet with another 9.85 on floor.
The 9.875 vault score was her fourth 9.875 or higher this season while the recognition is her third Newcomer of the Week award this season.
Carey, Esposito and the Beavers are back in action this weekend, facing Arizona in a road meet that starts at 2 p.m. PT.
