Carey Surpasses 100 Career Event Titles in Victory over Stanford

Oregon State gymnastics posts its second 197 of the season at Gill Coliseum, will return to action on the road next weekend.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Beaver gymnastics was in action Saturday afternoon, hosting the Stanford Carinal in front of 5,201 onlookers at Gill Coliseum in a meet that ended with the Beavers posting their second 197 of the season, resulting in a 197.100 – 196.600 victory. Several Beavers also set new career highs as Jade Carey officially surpassed 100 event titles while competing at Oregon State.

The first rotation, vault, saw OSU's scoring led by Sophia Esposito in the five spot. Coming off a 9.9 against UCLA last weekend, the Melville, N.Y. native posted a 9.875 while Carey (9.850), Sage Thompson (9.775), Natalie Briones (9.750), Kaitlin Garcia (9.725) and Olivia Buckner (9.625) rounded out what finished as a 48.975 vault score.

With Head Coach Tanya Chaplin noting post meet how the team emphasized building momentum coming into each new rotation, the Beavers would finish the uneven bars with a 49.350. Carey earned a 9.95 from each of the two judges to claim the event title while Sage Thompson's 9.90 was her second-consecutive 9.90 or better, having been given a 9.95 in last week's meet against UCLA. Taylor DeVries (9.875) along with Esposito (9.825), Briones (9.800) and Jennifer McMillan (9.700) also competed on the uneven bars.

That momentum continued into rotation three which saw OSU on the beam. Carey's 9.925 would win the event title but several Beavers also joined the fun with new career-highs. McMillan's 9.900 set a new personal record, surpassing the 9.875 she was given in the Feb. 2 meet at Utah, while Olivia Buckner also earned a 9.90 to set a new career-best mark on the beam. Esposito finished with a 9.85 as Thompson (9.750) and Ariana Young (9.700) rounded out a rotation that finished with a 49.325 team score.

OSU would finish the meet on floor exercise, which proved to be the team's best rotation of the afternoon. Garcia opened things up with a career-high-tying 9.900 and was followed by a Thompson 9.850. Savannah Miller added a 9.875 in the three spot before Esposito was given a 9.900. Young posted a 9.85 for her fourth-consecutive meet with a 9.85 or better on FX, before Carey rounded out the lineup with yet another event title-winning 9.925 to secure a 49.450 rotation score.

When all was said and done, it was Oregon State 197.100, Stanford 196.600.

Thompson's all-around performance was the first of her Oregon State career and culminated in a 39.275 while Esposito finished with a 39.450. Carey earned her fourth event title of the meet with a 39.650 all-around score.

With the four event titles, Carey officially surpassed 100 in her collegiate career and is now sitting at 101 with four meets remaining in the regular season. The program record, held by Chari Knight, is 116.

The Beavers are back in action on the road next weekend, facing Arizona in Tucson.
