Esposito Earns Pac-12 Newcomer of the Week Honors
February 13, 2024 | Women's Gymnastics
Named to the Pac-12 Preseason Newcomer Watch List, Esposito scored a 39.525 in her first all-around performance against UCLA.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Beaver gymnastics' Sophia Esposito was named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday. The announcement marks Esposito's second Newcomer of the Week award this season, having earned the same recognition on Jan. 23.
A freshman from Melville, N.Y., Esposito competed in the all-around against UCLA, the first time in her young career doing so. After starting strong with a 9.9 on vault, Esposito was given a 9.825 on bars and 9.850 on beam but saved the best for last, setting a new career-high with a 9.95 floor exercise routine.
Her 9.9 vault score was bested only by a UCLA gymnast earning a perfect 10 to win the event title, while the 9.95 on floor earned a share of the event title as she finished the meet with a 39.525.
Esposito was previously named Newcomer of the Week on Jan. 23 after a strong meet against Brown, winning the vault with a 9.900, finishing third on the beam with a 9.900 and posting a 9.875 on the floor.
The Beavers return to action this Saturday at Gill Coliseum, facing Stanford at 11 a.m. Tickets can be purchased by visiting the gymnastics ticketing website or calling the Beaver Ticket Office at 1-800-GO-BEAVS.
