Beavers Drop Close One To Miami
December 20, 2024 | Women's Basketball
MAUI, Hawai'i – Oregon State fought for all 40 minutes but shots didn't fall in a 61-56 loss in the Maui Classic championship game.
Catarina Ferreira led OSU in scoring for the second straight game, pouring in 19 points. Kelsey Rees contributed 15 with nine rebounds including four offensive boards.
The Beavers big run of the game came in the second quarter with an 11-2 start that forced a Miami timeout. Rees and Ferreira keyed the run with four points apiece and Cloe Vecina complimented the effort with a crafty fast break layup off a Rees' pass.
Miami countered in the third with a 16-6 quarter, taking away some of OSU's successful actions from the first half while the Beavers missed shots on others. The fourth quarter was an even affair with the Beavs' late run coming up just short after pulling as close as three points on AJ Marotte jumpers and two free throws from Rees.
The Beavs held Miami to 1-of-16 on threes and shot 87 percent (13/15) from the free throw line. OSU shot 35 percent from the floor.
Up next, Oregon State heads home for a holiday break. The Beavs return to action at 2 p.m. on December 28 at Gonzaga. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
