CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State dropped its final non-conference home game 60-48 to UC Irvine on Sunday.
AJ Marotte, Catarina Ferreira, Tiara Bolden and Kelsey Rees tied for the team lead with eight points. Rees pulled down six rebounds, including the 500th board of her career.
The Beavers outscored UCI 30-12 in the paint, but OSU couldn't get shots to fall from outside the area. Defensively, the Beavs held the Anteaters to 35.1 percent from the floor.
The Beavs created good opportunities but couldn't finish them in the first quarter, going 4-for-17 and training 13-9 at the period's end. Ferreira provided a spark in the second, keying a 6-0 run that put the Beavs up 19-17. The senior kickstarted multiple fastbreaks, grabbing a rebound and going coast-to-coast for a basket and two assists.
From there, UC Irvine controlled the game. The Anteaters went on a 15-2 run to end the half, taking a 32-21 lead into the break and building on the margin in the second half.
Oregon State ended the game on an encouraging note, getting three-pointers from Bolden, Marotte and Susana Yepes to close the deficit. Cloe Vecina closed the game with a steal-and-score for two more points.
The Beavers head to Maui next week, taking on WKU on December 19th before playing Miami (FL) on December 20th. Fans can stream the entire tournament on the Oregon State Athletics YouTube channel.
