Oregon State Falls at Washington State
November 06, 2024 | Women's Soccer
PULLMAN, Wash. – Oregon State women's soccer fell 1-0 to the Washington Cougars on Wednesday at the Lower Soccer Field.
The offense was rolling early, creating a number of chances. After a McKenna Martinez shot was saved in the 18th minute, OSU held a 5-3 advantage in total shots, which included a 3-0 edge in shots on goal.
After conceding in the 36th, OSU was mere inches from leveling in the 38th minute, but a shot was saved off the line after a scramble in the box. In the 61st, off a corner kick, the Cougars saved another shot off the line that even deflected off the woodwork but bounced out.
Carly Carraher (four shots, two on goal) and Martinez (three shots, one on goal) both played the full 90 and led the Beaver attack, while reigning WCC Defensive Player of the Week Mya Sanchez made four saves in net.
Though Wednesday's loss hurts OSU's chances of winning the conference championship, it does not eliminate the team from contention.
Both No. 11 Santa Clara and No. 22 Pepperdine drew in their respective games, meaning Oregon State ends the night in third place in the conference standings, one point behind the Broncos and Waves, who are tied with 18 points.
The Beavers return to action Saturday night in Portland, facing the Pilots at Merlo Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
