October 28, 2024 | Women's Golf
KAILUA-KONA, Hawai'i – Raya Nakao fired a 4-under 69, with eight birdies, to lead the Oregon State women's golf team in the first round of the Nanea Invitational on Monday.
The Beavers opened their final tournament of the fall season with a 6-over 298 at the par-73, 6,449-yard Nanea Golf Club and are tied for ninth place with 36 holes to play.
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 10:30 a.m. PT on Tuesday and live scoring is available at this link.
Nakao birdied all four par-5's, three of the five par-4's on the back nine, and one par-3 to finish with a 4-under 69. Her eight birdies were the most on the day in the 60-player field. Nakao is tied for fourth place and only two shots behind a trio of golfers who finished with a 6-under 67.
The sophomore from Kaneohe, Hawai'i now has 16 sub-par scores in her 45 rounds as a collegian, with 14 of them coming last season as a true freshman when she set the Oregon State single-season scoring record with a 72.05.
Kyra Ly, a native of Portland, had four birdies and four bogeys to post an even-par 73 and continue a strong junior campaign. Eight of her 10 rounds this season have been 73 or better, including a 5-under 67 that tied her best career score at Oregon State.
Clara Alevag, a true freshman from Gothenburg, Sweden, had four birdies – two on the par-5's and two on the par-4's – to finish with a 4-over 77. She had six birdies in her first collegiate round – at the Leadership and Golf Invitational in September – that helped her post a 3-under 69.
Senior Madde Sund had one birdie and carded a 6-over 79, while sophomore Rebecca Kim dropped in a pair of birdies on her final two holes to finish with a 9-over 82.
No. 1 Stanford (13-under 279) holds a two-stroke lead over No. 8 Arizona State (11-under 281) to top the team leaderboard. Isla McDonald-O'Brien of Arizona State, Lucia Lopez Ortega of San Jose State and Megha Ganne of Stanford all share the individual lead with a 6-under 67.
