Briones, Carey, DeVries Earn Pac-12 Weekly Honors
January 09, 2024 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Three Oregon State gymnasts earned Pac-12 weekly honors following the first meet of the season, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Taylor DeVries was named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Week, Jade Carey was selected the Pac-12 Specialist of the Week and Natalie Briones was voted the Pac-12 Coaches' Choice of the Week.
DeVries, a true freshman from Roscoe, Ill., competed in her first collegiate event at the Mean Girls Super 16 Championships and responded with a 9.900 on the uneven bars to finish in a tie for 4th place among the 28 gymnasts in the rotation.
Carey, the reigning two-time Pac-12 Gymnast of the Year, won the event title in the bars with a 9.975 at the Super 16 Championships and is ranked No. 1 in the nation in that event after the first week of competition. She also competed on the beam and finished second with a 9.900. Carey has now earned Pac-12 weekly honors 16 times in her career (9 gymnast, 6 freshman/newcomer, 1 specialist).
Briones, a junior from Gilbert, Ariz., competed in three events at a meet for the first time in her three-year Oregon State career at the Super 16 Championships. She posted a career-best 9.900 on the bars to finish in a tie for fourth place and had a 9.800 on the floor to finish in a tie for ninth. Briones competed sporadically her first two years as a Beaver while dealing with injuries.
This is the fifth year the Pac-12 has awarded the Gymnastics Coaches' Choice of the Week, as voted on by the conference coaches, and Briones is the second Beaver to earn it joining Madi Dagen (Feb. 8, 2022).
