January 16, 2024 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Jade Carey was named the Pac-12 Specialist of the Week for the second time in as many meets this season, and Sage Thompson was selected the Pac-12 Gymnastics Coaches' Choice of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
The Pac-12 Conference has awarded eight weekly honors through the first two weeks of the season, and the Beavers have claimed five of them -- Natalie Briones, Coaches' Choice; Jade Carey, Specialist (two times); Taylor DeVries, Newcomer; and Sage Thompson, Coaches' Choice.
Carey, the reigning two-time Pac-12 Gymnast of the Year, posted a 9.975 for the second-straight week, this time at the Rutgers January Quad, and remains No. 1 nationally in that event. She has now earned Pac-12 weekly honors 17 times in her career (9 gymnast, 6 freshman/newcomer, 2 specialist).
Thompson, a transfer from the University of Utah, competed in three events at the Rutgers January Quad in Piscataway, N.J., and finished in the top two in all of them. She tied her career high with a 9.850 on the vault to finish second, posted a 9.925 on the bars to finish second and tied her best career score on the floor with a 9.850 to finish in a tie for second. Thompson has been perfect in all six of her routines this season.
This is the fifth year the Pac-12 has awarded the Gymnastics Coaches' Choice of the Week, as voted on by the conference coaches, and Thompson is the third Beaver to earn it joining Natalie Briones, who was chosen last week, and Madi Dagen (Feb. 8, 2022).
