September 19, 2023 | Women's Golf
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – The Oregon State women's golf team posted its best score in the final round of the Leadership and Golf Invitational and finished in a tie for third place on Tuesday.
The Beavers concluded the tournament with a 10-over 290-295-289--874 at the par-72, 6,022-yard Chambers Bay Golf Course and finished in a tie for third with Georgia Southern.
Oregon State was in fifth place after Monday's 36 holes before rallying in the final round with a 1-over 289, the fourth-best score of the day.
USC cruised to the title in the 18-team event with a 27-under 837, which was 31 strokes better than second place Minnesota (4-over 868). Annie Avery of USC claimed medalist honors with a 9-under 207.
Kyra Ly posted her first career Top 10 finish, a tie for sixth place, with a steady and consistent 1-under 72-72-71--215 that included an eagle and seven birdies over the three rounds.
Her previous best finish was a tie for 21st place at the NCAA Regionals last spring in Westfield, Indiana. The 71 in the final round was the fourth sub-par score of her young career.
Chayse Gomez made a huge jump up the leaderboard in the second and third rounds, finishing in a tie for 31st place with a 5-over 79-72-70--221. She took an unfortunate 10 on a par-5 in the first round but responded by playing even golf over the 53 other holes in the tournament.
Gomez, who is in her fifth year at Oregon State, now has 21 rounds in red figures in her collegiate career.
Madde Sund was a stroke back of Gomez, finishing in a tie for 33rd place with a 6-over 72-76-74--222. She had an eagle and nine birdies in the tournament.
True freshmen Raya Nakao and Rebecca Kim finished in a tie for 35th and tie for 38th, respectively. Nakao finished her second career collegiate tournament with a 7-over 73-76-74--223, while Kim, who was also playing in her second college tourney, shot an 8-over 73-75-76--224.
The Beavers return to action next week at the three-day Molly Collegiate Invitational in Monterey, Calif.
