Defense Earns Win in Florence
August 25, 2023 | Women's Basketball
FLORENCE, Italy – Oregon State racked up 33 steals and five blocks in a 118-25 victory over Pallacanestro Firenze to open their foreign tour games.
The Beavers had six score in double-figures led by Raegan Beers' 23 and Dominika Paurová's 18. Paurová also recorded a team-high seven steals to go with five rebounds, four assists and a block.
"I thought the overall effort was elite. It was impressive just watching how hard we worked throughout the game. There was no let-up with this group," said head coach Scott Rueck. "I thought defense set the tone for us and it showed a commitment to that end of the floor. We were extremely disruptive for all 40 minutes, and we rebounded so well which led to a lot of success on the offensive end as well."
Despite the turnovers, OSU commanded the first quarter. Beers led the team with five points, four rebounds and an assist while the team shot 57 percent from the floor.
The Beavers pulled away in the second quarter. OSU allowed just a single point in the period, winning it 28-1. Donovyn Hunter had the sequence of the half with two straight steals and baskets early in the quarter. The freshman finished with 12 points and six steals.
Timea Gardiner carried much of the scoring load in the second, scoring 8 of her 16 points in the period. She also finished with nine rebounds and three steals. The Beavs led 49-11 at the break.
The third quarter saw four players score 6-or-more points with Beers, Gardiner, Paurová and Sela Heide leading the offense as the Beavs continued to dominate. Adlee Blacklock turned defense into offense with two steals leading to layups and a three-pointer that gave her seven points in the period. The sophomore finished with 14 points and Heide rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points.
All told, Oregon State closed the game shooting 60 percent from the floor while making 20-of-28 shots from the charity stripe (77%).
The Beavers' next game will be on Sunday against ASD Polisportiva Casarsa.
