Beavers Fall to Panthers
August 24, 2023 | Men's Soccer
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men's soccer team dropped its season-opener 2-1 to No. 21 Florida International Thursday evening at Lorenz Field.
Vicho Castro scored the first goal of his Oregon State career in his Beaver debut, giving the Beavers the lead in the first half. The Panthers answered with one tally in each half to take the victory.
Dante Williams got on the scoresheet, notching his first assist of the 2023 season. As a team, the Beavers held a 16-13 advantage in shots, led by Williams with four.
Oregon State created a number of early chances, with Williams and Arnau Farnos both forcing saves within the first 10 minutes. Castro opened the scoring in the 15th, firing a ball towards the frame, which evaded the keeper before finding the net. Florida International evened things up in the 28th minute.
Both sides found their way to scoring opportunities in the latter phase of the opening period, with Oregon State nearly retaking the lead when Logan Farrington forced the Panther goalie to parry a shot away. The teams headed to the intermission level at one.
Williams took aim at the target early in the second half, but his curling effort was wide. FIU went in front on a headed goal in the 55th minute.
Enzo Newman came close to finding the equalizer with 15 minutes to play, but his shot sailed just over the bar. The Beavers had a chance to level things in the 81st minute when they earned a penalty kick, but the shot was saved.
Oregon State continued to press forward in the closing phases of the 90 minutes, creating flurry of scoring chances. OSU could not level the score, however, as the Panthers claimed the victory.
Farrington and Farnos tallied three shots apiece.
The Beavers will be back at Lorenz Field Sunday at 3 p.m. to take on UC Riverside.
