Beavers Top Highlanders for Dalby’s First Win
August 27, 2023 | Men's Soccer
CORVALLIS – Oregon State head coach Greg Dalby earned his first victory as a Beaver on Sunday, as OSU took a 3-0 win over UC Riverside at Paul Lorenz Field.
Nicklas Lund, Logan Farrington and Ellis Spikner accounted for the Beaver goals. Lund's score marked his first tally in his three seasons with the team. Farrington, who joined Oregon State as a transfer from Milwaukie, also notched his first goal in Orange and Black.
"The performance today was really strong for our guys," Dalby said. "The team was really hungry to get out there and get their first win of the year. I think we executed better than we did on Thursday – our guys had a little bit more patience today, and I think they enjoyed the game more."
As a team, the Beavers had the bulk of the scoring chances, out-shooting the Highlanders 23-9.
Fran Cortijo tallied a pair of assists in his first start of the season. Dante Williams and Andrew De Gannes recorded one assist apiece.
Oregon State started the match on the front-foot, narrowly missing multiple opportunities to put a player in on goal within the first 10 minutes of action. Spikner put the ball in the net in the 15th minute, but the strike was ruled offside. The forward had another chance from point-blank range two minutes later, but was unable redirect Williams' cross on target.
The Beavers opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, as Cortijo curled a left-footed cross into the box that Lund was able to head past the keeper.
Oregon State followed that up with two goals the span of less than 40 seconds. Farrington slotted one home in the 41st minute, finishing off an impressive build-up that featured a cross into a dangerous area from De Gannes. Thirty-seven seconds later, Spikner dribbled through a host of Highlanders and proceeded to place his shot just inside the post to send OSU to the break in front 3-0.
Jesus Sanchez made a nice save on a shot they was curling just under the crossbar less than a minute into the second frame. Spikner very nearly netted his second in the 65th minute, as his effort bounced off the crossbar and came within inches of entering the goal.
Williams and Arnau Farnos both placed shots on goal on a scramble in the box in the 70th minute, but could not add a fourth goal. The Oregon State defense continued to lock down UC Riverside to complete the shutout.
The Beavers will be back at Lorenz Field Friday to take on Utah Valley.
