June 14, 2023 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – After serving as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach / Director of Player Development during the 2023 season, former All-American and 2017 Pac-12 Gymnast of the Year Kaytianna Kell (formerly McMillan) returns as an Assistant Coach for the GymBeavs ahead of the 2024 campaign.
"I'm very excited to join the coaching staff at Oregon State and continue to be a part of such an amazing program," Kell said. "I look forward to working with current and future student-athletes while sharing my experience, knowledge and love for Beaver Nation. I am grateful to have the opportunity to coach alongside the Chaplin's and help the gymnastics team continue to reach new heights."
In Kell's lone season as Special Assistant to the Head Coach / Director of Player Development for Oregon State, the Beavs earned their second-straight Pac-12 Regular Season Title, advance to postseason for the 48th-straight season, while breaking through to the NCAA Regional Finals for first time since 2019.
"I am thrilled to announce the addition of Kaytianna to our coaching staff," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "She is an amazing person, excellent coach and incredible mentor whose work ethic, passion and enthusiasm for the sport of gymnastics is contagious.
She was a great addition to our staff last season and her contributions in 2019 as a volunteer assistant were a valuable part of the success we have enjoyed. We are extremely excited to be moving forward with Kaytianna in a full-time role and know that she will continue serving this program well."
Kell spent the 2022 season at UC Davis where the team finished the season with the highest NQS score in school history, tallying a 195.915, while Kell assisted in 17 MPSF All-Conference honors with eight individuals receiving recognition, including the MPSF Gymnast of the Year and three Aggies qualifying for the 2022 NCAA Regional Championship.
The Aggies earned the highest score in school history at an MPSF Championship, earning a 196.05 to finish second at the meet. Kell assisted in the Aggies breaking the school's road score with a 196.225 at Sacramento State, as well as school and conference vault score with a 49.3 at San Jose State.
During the 2020 season, in her first year on the Seattle Pacific staff, Kell was honored as the NCAA Division II Assistant Coach of the Year by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association. The Falcons finished the season with their highest national qualifying score in four years at 192.745.
Kell's coaching career began at Oregon State, where she served as recruiting coordinator and mentored the balance beam squad. The Beavers finished sixth at the NCAA Championships for their best national finish since 1996, while Maela Lazara captured second-team All-America accolades on beam under Kell's tutelage in 2019.
Originally from Coburg, Oregon, Kell enjoyed an outstanding career at Oregon State. She qualified for the NCAA regionals as a freshman and senior, and garnered five total All-Pac-12 Conference honors, including first-team distinction on floor exercise and all-around in 2017.
In Kell's senior season, she won the floor and all-around titles at the Champaign Regional, then added a 9.900 at the national meet to claim second-team All-America status. Overall, she hit 51 of 52 routines that year, scored 26 overall event wins and landed the first 10.0 by an OSU gymnast in almost a decade. Kell was honored as the Pac-12 Gymnast of the Year and named to the final ballot of the AAI Award, which is presented to the top senior gymnast in the country.
In the classroom, Kell earned NACGC/W (now WCGA) Scholastic All-America acclaim in each of her four seasons, snared three Pac-12 All-Academic nods, and helped Oregon State compile the No. 10 GPA in the nation as a senior. She graduated in 2017 with a degree in human development and family science.
Kell is married to former OSU football player Drew Kell. The couple have one son, Kylen, and are expecting their second son in October.
