Joy Selig, an Oregon State gymnastics legend, set the bar high showing future gymnasts how it's done making the most of her years as a student athlete.
From 1988-1991 Selig took over NCAA gymnastics by becoming a seven-time All-American and receiving the American Award recipient given to the nation's top senior gymnast. In addition, while Oregon State hosted nationals, Selig won the NCAA national title on beam and on floor in 1990. Selig also won the NCAA national title on beam in '89 as well. The same year she graduated she also won the NCAA woman of the year in Oregon.
Upon graduating, Selig held school scoring records in the all-around, balance beam, and floor. Since then, she has been named to the women's Pac-10 All-Decade Team in 1995 amongst all sports and she was inducted into the Oregon State University Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
Coming out of Placerville, California, Selig didn't know much about what she was getting herself into. In an interview, when asked about how she chose Oregon State she says "when I went to Oregon State I was like 'this fits. This just feels good.' You know when you put on your favorite pair of jeans on, you know, go 'oh, this feels great, this is me". Selig continues to glow when talking about her time as a Beaver even years later.
Selig is being showcased in conjunction with OSU's SEE IT, BEav IT initiative, marking the 50th anniversary of Title IX. It will focus on celebrating the stories of OSU prominent women's athletes and athletics.
"Title IX set the stage for important growth, and we are grateful to all of the pioneers of women's athletics who helped create opportunities for our current generation of student-athletes," said OSU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Barnes.
"We look forward to sharing the stories of some of our outstanding past and present female student-athletes, coaches and staff members throughout the 2022-23 year."
Following her career at Oregon State and starting a new journey, Selig has coached at University of Washington gymnastics and University of Denver gymnastics. Denver is where she met her husband and has since raised two boys alongside family in Flagstaff, Arizona.
