Historic Weekend Closes with 5K Title, 8th Place Team Finish
May 14, 2023 | Women's Track & Field
WALNUT, Calif. – In 2015, Oregon State finished the Pac-12 Championships in last place with five points. On Sunday, the Beavers closed the weekend with 55 points and in eighth place, their best finish in both categories in school history.
OSU reached the record totals thanks to a 24-point Sunday that featured its second women's event title in school history – fewer than 24 hours after the first – its best performance by a thrower at the Pac-12 Championships and points in five events.
"This one was for all those who have been behind us and supporting from day one. To score 55 points and only be 6.5 points from 5th shows the hard work from the staff and certainly from the student-athletes," Oregon State head coach Louie Quintana said. "It was hard to top the first two days, but we did just that - capitalizing on our scoring opportunities with big performances across the board."
"Kaylee ran a huge 4:14, less than 24 hours after running 9:45 in the steeple - people just don't do that. That's a stud right there. Adael was fantastic in getting 6th in the 400h and,Jade was just about as solid as you can be getting 2nd in the discus. But, Grace was historic. She's the athlete of the meet in my book. Nobody performed better in the Pac-12 than she did this weekend. What a great weekend to be a Beav," Quintana finished.
Grace Fetherstonhaugh highlighted the day with a win in the 5,000 meters, her second victory of the weekend. The redshirt senior finished in 16:01.78 fewer than 24 hours after running the nation's second-best 3,000-meter steeplechase time. Her 20 points in the meet were just 0.5 off earning Pac-12 Championships Athlete of the Meet honors.
Jade Whitfield had the Beavers' best Pac-12 Championships performance by a thrower, finishing second in the discus with a 57.75m/189-5. Whitfield finished behind just Oregon's Jorinde Van Klinken, a top-five finisher in the event at the most recent world championships.
Kaylee Mitchell's day did not yield as many points as Whitfield or Fetherstonhaugh, but it was equally important. In her third race in three days, the redshirt senior finished seventh in a loaded 1,500 meters field to secure two more points for OSU. Mitchell's weekend was emblematic of her leadership and grit.
Adael Scatena, fresh off a school-record performance on Friday, added three more points with a sixth-place result in the 400-meter hurdles. Scatena closed the race in 59.66 seconds. In a sign of her growth since joining the Beavs, Scatena took six seconds off her first Pac-12 Championships performance where the now junior finished in 1:05.94 and did not qualify for finals.
Oregon State's 4x100-meter team earned the first point of the day with a 47.18-second race. The Beavs placed eighth and Chelsea Howard, Jada Hurley, Taylor Weidinger and Delaney Bahn's performance is tenth-best all-time.
