Beavers Make A Ninth-Inning Rally, But Lose 2-1 To Cal
March 25, 2023 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State baseball made a late rally Saturday but saw the game-tying runner stranded at second in the ninth in a 2-1 loss to California at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Down 2-0, the Beavers put the first two batters – Mason Guerra and Gavin Turley – on base via singles. Mikey Kane moved them over on a sacrifice bunt, and Guerra scored on a ground ball to third off the bat by Ruben Cedillo.
Dallas Macias battled back from an 0-2 count to earn a walk, but California's Tucker Bougie earned his first save of the season when he got pinch hitter Brady Kasper swinging on strike three to end the game.
The teams are now set to play the rubber match Sunday at noon.
Oregon State (14-9 overall, 2-6 Pac-12 Conference) starter Jacob Kmatz and three relievers – AJ Hutcheson, Nelson Keljo and Ben Ferrer – held Cal to five hits and four walks. But the Golden Bears struck first on a solo home run by Jack Johnston in the second. Cal (10-9, 2-6) added to its lead with a run on a wild pitch in the sixth.
Kmatz was charged with the loss and dropped to 1-4 on the year. He allowed five hits and two runs in 5 1/3 innings.
His counterpart, Paulshawn Pasqualotto, held the Beavers to one hit in five scoreless innings. He improved to 2-0 on the year.
Guerra picked up two of the Beavers' four hits.
