Beavers Rally On Back Nine At Papago Golf Course

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Oregon State women's golf team rallied on the back nine to climb the leaderboard after the first round at the competitive PING/ASU Invitational on Friday.
The Beavers are in a tie for sixth place after shooting a 7-over 295 at the par-72, 6,543-yard Papago Golf Course. The stacked field features 12 of the 17 teams ranked in the latest Golfstat.com Top 50.
Amanda Minni (t-17), Chayse Gomez (t-22), Danique Stokmans (t-39) and Kelsey Webster (t-39) shot a combined 2 under on the back nine after carding a 9 over going out.
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
Minni continued her fabulous final campaign as a Beaver, firing an even-par 72 with three birdies and three bogeys. She birdied the par-4, 350-yard second, par-4, 431-yard sixth and par-4 413-yard 18th holes. It's the ninth time in 16 rounds this season Minni has shot 72 or better.
Gomez was 3 over through the first five holes but got hot the rest of the way with three birdies, nine pars and one bogey to post a 1-over 73. Her birdies came on the par-3, 154-yard eighth, par-5, 525-yard 10th and par-4, 360-yard 14th holes.
Stokmans dropped in three birdies and took six bogeys to post a 3-over 75. Her birdies came on the par-5, 525-yard 10th, par-3, 146-yard 11th and par-5, 512-yard 15th holes. Stokmans led the Beavers with tie for 17th place finish at their most recent tournament, the Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational in Fairfax, Calif.
Webster was 6 over through 14 holes but eagled the par-4, 401-yard 16th hole and finished the day with a birdie on the par-4, 413-yard 18th to card a 3-over 75. She also rolled in a birdie on the par-5, 525-yard 10th hole.
Madde Sund played much better after the turn to finish her day with a 10-over 82.
Northwestern was the only team in red figures, shooting a 6-under 282, and holds an eight-stroke lead over Baylor, Oregon and Mississippi State (2-over 290).
Julia Lopez Ramirez of Mississippi State leads the 90-player after firing a 5-under 67.
