Beavers Tie Golden Bears to Cap Home Series
March 19, 2023 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State roared back in the game's final regulation frames to tie California, 5-5, on Sunday afternoon. Due to travel concerns for the Golden Bears, the game was called when Grace Messmer was due to bat in the home half of the eighth.
"I thought the team competed well and came out clutch in the seventh inning," said head coach Laura Berg. "Des (Rivera) hitting the game-tying single was big. I thought these guys did a phenomenal job. Tarni (Stepto) was awesome in the circle, I'm proud of this team."
Tarni Stepto – the starter – tossed all 8.0 on the day. She allowed all five runs but fanned a season-best 10 batters to keep Cal off the bags. In the sixth, she struck out the side.
Frankie Hammoude launched a solo shot – her second in as many days – to get the scoring underway on Sunday in the first. Cal answered two frames later with a four-spot on the board via a pair of two-run homers.
OSU chipped away at their deficit with single-RBI knocks in the third and fourth innings to bring it to a 5-3 game. In the third, Kaiea Higa brought Messmer home before Eliana Gottlieb's single down the right field line brought Jade Soto home in the fourth.
In the sixth and seventh, Des Rivera played a key role in tying things up. Rivera crossed home off a wild pitch before her seventh inning single brought Kris Romulo in to level the game. With the bases loaded and two away, Maddy Clark couldn't quite let the home fans go home happy as she flew out to send it to extras.
Despite allowing a Golden Bear to reach first in what-turned-out-to-be the final inning, the Beavers stranded her and kept Cal off the board.
Oregon State will head to Stanford for its next series, set for March 24-27. Friday's first pitch from the Farm is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen on Pac-12 Network Bay Area.
