Sun Devils Stop Comeback Bid by Beavs
February 05, 2023 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team could not complete a comeback attempt against Pac-12 foe, Arizona State, and dropped a 23-16 decision on Sunday night. With the result, the Beavers saw their three-match winning streak snap.
Digging out from a 14-0 deficit after the first four bouts, the Beavers (6-6, 2-1 Pac-12) won four of the next five to force a winner-take-all heavyweight bout. Isaiah Crosby got the Beavers on the board in the 157-lb. bout with a 10-6 win by decision. Crosby battled back from an 0-2 hole and made it an 8-4 lead after the second period and finished it with a 10-6 difference.
Matthew Olguin, the 19th-ranked wrestler at 165, built an early 6-0 lead in his bout and never looked back for an 18-3 tech fall win. Olguin entered the third frame with a substantial 13-point advantage at 16-3 and clocked nearly three minutes of riding time to secure the win.
After a heartbreaking loss in sudden victory in the 174-lb. bout, seventh-ranked Trey Munoz used a takedown in the late stages of the first to kick off his big win. The commanding display by the Californian did not let up as he turned a 5-1 lead at the beginning of the third to the 14-4 final.
Tanner Harvey (No. 15 at 197) got the Beavs back within a point in the dual's penultimate match. Like Munoz in the bout before, Harvey took a 14-4 major decision. A pair of takedowns highlighted the first and gave him the 4-1 lead after the first, and then again like Munoz, ran away with it afterward. The graduate student from Elkton, Ore., stretched his lead to 9-3 after the second period and then finishing things off with the extra point from his 4:16 of riding time.
An ASU win by fall secured the bout for the visitors as they took it with a 23-16 score.
Oregon State will step out of conference for the final time in the 2022-23 season this Saturday, the 11th when they take on Wyoming. Action from Gill Coliseum is set for 7 p.m.
