December 17, 2023 | Men's Basketball
CORVALLIS – Jordan Pope knocked down a pair of free throws to put the Beavers ahead with 13 seconds to play, as the Oregon State men's basketball team defeated UTSA 66-65 Sunday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.
With the win, the Beavers move to 7-3 on the season, and remain unbeaten at home with a perfect 7-0 mark at Gill Coliseum.
Pope led all scorers with 19 points in the game, going 7-for-14 from the floor and 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Dexter Akanno went 6-for-10 from the floor to finish with 15 points, three rebounds and a pair of blocks.
KC Ibekwe hit five of his seven shot attempts to end the afternoon with 11 points. Tyler Bilodeau rounded out a quartet of Beavers in double-figures with 10 points.
Michael Rataj finished with eight rebounds and four assists.
As a team, Oregon State shot 44.8 percent from the floor and 50 percent in the second half.
Pope scored the first eight Beaver points, as the teams ever level at eight five minutes into the contest. The Roadrunners would lead by as many as nine in the first half, before heading to the intermission up 33-27.
Oregon State wasted little time retaking the lead in the second half, going up 41-40 on a Bilodeau 3-pointer. The teams went back-and-forth from there, as the Roadrunners were in front 54-52 with eight minutes to go.
UTSA led by four with 2:30 left on the clock, but a Bilodeau triple cut the edge to a point. Pope's free throws gave OSU the late lead, and the Oregon State defense clamped down on the final Roadrunner possession to claim the victory.
The Beavers will wrap up nonconference play Thursday when Idaho State visits Gill Coliseum.
