Statement Made: Beavs Beat Seven Top-20 Teams at Nuttycombe
October 13, 2023 | Women's Cross Country
MADISON, Wis. - Oregon State came to the Nuttycombe Invitational with something to prove.
After placing 26th at the same race last year, the Beavs outraced seven top-20 teams this year, including no. 8 Washington and no. 10 Colorado, racing to a seventh-place team finish.
"We took a great step as a group today. We trusted it at the start and got out in great position and we were able to race from a different perspective. I love the fight of the entire crew today. The weather was absolutely horrendous - but we ran with grit and poise. Very proud of the group," head coach Louie Quintana said.
Redshirt senior Kaylee Mitchell led the charge with her fifth-place result, shaving four seconds off her time last season. Not far behind was Grace Fetherstonhaugh. The senior earned the no. 22 spot in her season debut.
Three underclassmen Sage Brooks (60), Ruby Broadbent (92) and Kate Laurent (139) rounded out the scoring runners for the Beavs. All three finished higher than OSU's third-best runner in 2022, allowing the Beavers to notch the much-improved team finish.
Laurent, in particular, moved up 67 spots from her 204th place result last season. Those 67 points effectively moved the Beavers up from 10th to 7th in the team standings.
In the day's B race, Teaghan Knox led Oregon State with a 55th place finish. Emily Foote (65th) and Jamie Hamlin (67th) each notched finishes in the top-70 as well.
