Beavs Romp over Roadrunners
January 29, 2023 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – In its return to Gill Coliseum following a pair of road tilts and a bye week, the 28th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team dominated CSU Bakersfield, 43-4, on Sunday afternoon.
After dropping the opening match at 149 lbs., it was all Beavs (6-5, 2-0 Pac-12) from there on en route to their third-straight win.
Faced with an early deficit at 4-0, Isaiah Crosby made quick work of his bout to take a win by fall to give the home fans a 6-4 advantage in the 157 lb. match.
21st-ranked Matthew Olguin took a win by forfeit to bump the advantage to eight at 12-4.
Mateo Olmos – ranked 24th – won a thriller to keep up the lead. With time expiring, he took down CSU Bakersfield's Albert Urias at the end to win the 174-lb. bout. Ninth-ranked Trey Munoz was working early and often on the way to his 19-3 tech fall win. He opened things up with a 6-1 lead after one behind a pair of takedowns and a two-point near fall.
Jackson McKinney (197) took a win by fall to keep the advantage up and out of the Roadrunners' reach. In the heavyweight bout, Charley Hastriter chalked up a win by major decision at 9-1.
No. 13 Brandon Kaylor fought off Eddie Flores in a closely contested bout at 125. The Washingtonian grabbed a 2-0 lead and held on for the 3-2 win for the 33-4 advantage.
Quick finishes via major decision and fall from Gabe Whisenhunt (133) and No. 25 Cleveland Belton (141) sealed the massive win.
The win gave the Beavers their second consecutive win in the Pac-12 home opener under Pendleton, as well as their third three-match winning streak in two seasons.
The Beavers will be back in action on Sunday, February 5th against Arizona State in another Pac-12 tilt. Action with the Sun Devils is slated for a 7 p.m. start and can be seen nationally on Pac-12 Networks.
